ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH INSPECTOR – Hazardous Materials and Waste (6120)

Type : Full‑time, Permanent Civil Service
Salary : $129,038 – $156,754 Annually
OVERVIEW The Environmental Health Inspector in the Hazardous Materials and Waste Program conducts inspections, surveillance, and enforcement activities to protect the public health of San Franciscans. The role ensures compliance with local health codes, state regulations, and environmental standards at hazardous materials and waste facilities, medical providers, and related sites.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Conduct routine and targeted inspections of hazardous materials and waste facilities, medical waste sites, and related businesses to determine compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
Investigate complaints, perform field testing, acquire laboratory samples, and document violations.
Draft written complaints, coordinate with city departments, and issue violations and corrective actions.
Oversee the opening, closing, and regulatory status of new hazardous materials and waste facilities.
Review and process applications, plans, and documents for storage tank repairs/closures, CERS submissions, and other compliance matters.
Provide public and business education on hazardous materials, waste, and medical waste management.
Appear as a witness in court litigation and testify in related matters when required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education : Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, with at least 30 semester units in, or a major in one of the following: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, Geology, Environmental Health, Engineering, Toxicology, Industrial Hygiene, Hazardous Materials Management, Fire Science, or related discipline.
Experience : Two (2) years of experience in hazardous materials, hazardous waste, site mitigation, medical waste, or similar regulatory service, OR one (1) year as an inspector in a Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA).
Licenses & Certifications : Valid California driver’s license; International Code Council (ICC) UST Inspector Certification within 180 days of appointment; HAZWOPER Certification within one year of appointment.
Demonstrated knowledge of field inspection techniques, state laws, city ordinances, and health department rules.
