Responsibilities

The Assistant Director of Government Affairs supports the Vice President of Government Affairs in advancing the University’s policy, funding, research, and strategic priorities at the local, state, and federal levels.

Assists in developing advocacy strategies, coordinating key government affairs programs, and ensuring compliance with all applicable ethics and lobbying laws.

Builds effective relationships with elected and appointed officials across all levels of government, particularly with the Florida State Legislature, Governor’s Office, State Agencies, and in jurisdictions where FAMU maintains campuses or research sites.

Monitors and analyzes legislative agendas, hearings, bills, and regulatory actions that may impact the University; facilitates meetings, briefings, tours, and other engagement opportunities.

Identifies and evaluates funding opportunities aligned with University goals and supports the development of proposals or applications.

Develops and implements advocacy strategies, including messaging, policy briefs, talking points, and issue responses in coordination with the Vice President for Government Affairs.

Supports alumni and student engagement efforts that strengthen the University’s advocacy network.

Plans, coordinates, and executes programs and initiatives managed by the Office of Government Affairs, including the State Legislative Internship Program, Office of Public Policy Events, and FAMU Day at the Capitol.

Assists in developing the University’s annual Legislative Budget Request and other policy and funding priorities.

Prepares bill summaries, policy analyses, and briefings that identify risks, opportunities, and impacts to the University.

Tracks state and federal legislation and maintains updated bill‑tracking logs; maintains full compliance with ethics, lobbying requirements, and University policies.

Supports implementation of the University’s strategic and accountability plans as assigned; maintains accurate documentation, reports, and communications.

Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, and a minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience working within the State of Florida legislative process.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated experience in legislative policy development, fiscal and budget analysis, and applied research.

Experience drafting and reviewing legislative and policy‑related materials, including bill analyses, budget requests, briefing memoranda, talking points, and official correspondence.

Experience serving as a senior staff member for an appointed or elected official, with responsibility for advising on legislative, policy, budgetary, or governmental affairs matters.

Working knowledge of the State of Florida budget development process.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with elected officials, legislative staff, executive agencies, and institutional leadership.

Ability to manage multiple priorities, exercise sound judgment, and maintain professionalism and discretion in a fast‑paced, high‑profile governmental environment.

Pay Plan This is an Administrative and Professional (A&P) position.
