Job Description This role requires a visionary editorial leader who deeply understands internet culture, humor, social content formats, and the nuances of short‑form storytelling. As Editorial Director, you will manage the Editorial team, partner closely with Creative, Production, and Brand Partnerships, and drive the creative decisions that define Overheard’s presence across platforms.
You will be responsible for developing content strategies, setting the editorial agenda, guiding content creation, and maintaining the brand’s voice at scale. You are a leader, a tastemaker, a storyteller, and a creative problem‑solver who can translate cultural moments into highly engaging Overheard content.
This role reports into the VP of Overheard. We are prioritizing candidates in the New York City area (hybrid), but may also be based in the Los Angeles Area (remote).
Responsibilities Editorial Leadership & Content Strategy
Set and execute the overarching content strategy for Overheard across platforms
Define and maintain Overheard’s voice, tone, and editorial POV across static posts, video formats, and branded content
Identify high‑impact topics, formats, and cultural hooks that Overheard should cover and determine how they come to life
Shape a long‑term editorial roadmap that aligns with brand objectives and audience growth goals
Team Management & Creative Direction
Lead, mentor, and manage the Editorial team, ensuring output is high‑quality, fast‑moving, and strategically aligned
Provide direction on static post ideation, caption writing, narrative framing, and video concept creation
Guide video development alongside production leads — shaping idea generation, scripting, and execution
Support team development with clarity on roles, expectations, feedback loops, and growth paths
Social Video & Platform Strategy
Serve as an expert in short‑form and social‑first video storytelling across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube
Develop video concepts in collaboration with Production and Creative
Identify new visual trends, editing styles, and narrative formats to evolve Overheard’s creative identity
Ensure content remains platform‑native and optimized for performance
Trend Forecasting & Cultural Awareness
Maintain a strong pulse on cultural moments, viral conversations, lifestyle trends, humor, and emerging internet behaviors
Quickly identify opportunities for real‑time content that aligns with Overheard’s voice
Filter cultural signals into editorial decisions and creative direction
Content Calendar Ownership
Build and oversee the full editorial content calendar across all Overheard properties
Ensure programming covers all brand priorities, aligns with tentpole moments, and drives audience engagement
Work cross‑functionally to coordinate branded content slots and campaign needs
Brand Voice & Quality Control
Review and approve all editorial output (static and video) for voice, accuracy, and creative quality
Ensure consistency and cohesion across multiple Overheard pages and formats
Maintain creative excellence while evolving the brand as platforms and audience taste shift
Branded Content Collaboration
Serve as the editorial counterpart to Brand Partnerships on Overheard campaigns
Alongside the Associate Creative Director, guide the development of branded content concepts that feel authentic to Overheard
Ensure branded deliverables meet both client expectations and Overheard’s creative standards
Data & Performance Insight Integration
Partner with the Data team to review content performance, identify learnings, and adjust strategy
Use insights to inform content decisions, test new formats, and optimize editorial output
Present editorial insights and recommendations to leadership as needed
Qualifications
6–10+ years of editorial, content, or social media leadership experience (publisher, digital media, entertainment, or social‑first brand preferred)
Deep understanding of short‑form video, social content formats, and the evolving social ecosystem
Strong editorial judgment and ability to shape storylines, memes, and video concepts for high engagement
Demonstrated experience managing a fast‑paced creative or editorial team
Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills with mastery of tone and brand voice
Highly attuned to culture, humor, lifestyle trends, and internet‑native storytelling
Strong collaboration skills across Production, Creative, Sales, and Data
Ability to balance speed with quality, and creative innovation with brand consistency
Organized, decisive, proactive, and able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously

The base salary for this position at the time of posting will range from $120,000 to $140,000. Individual compensation varies based on job related factors, including business needs, experience, level of responsibility, and qualifications.
