Ambulatory Patient Care Technician | ENT Clinic
The Ambulatory Patient Care Technician works in collaboration with the multidisciplinary health care delivery team under the direction of the Registered Nurse to perform basic nursing care activities, assist in maintaining a safe, clean, stocked patient care setting, assist staff members, and help direct patient flow.
Minimum Education High School Diploma or GED (Required)
Minimum Work Experience 1 year experience in an acute health care setting – preferably pediatrics (Preferred)
Functional Accountabilities Clinical Activities
Collect data and document information for meaningful use: chief complaint, current medications, allergies, tobacco/smoking history, and smoke exposure; accurately obtain vital signs (TPR, BP), height, weight, and head circumference; orient the family at the time of the visit.
Recognize abnormalities and report them to the Registered Nurse or Provider; assist in screening patients for pain; recognize indicators of abuse and neglect and report findings.
Provide basic nursing care (e.g., provide nourishment, assist patient with ambulating, escort patient at time of discharge).
Check and ensure all relevant equipment (scales, stadiometers, vital signs machines, otoscopes, ophthalmoscopes, oxygen, and suction) is in working order; perform corrective actions or inform the Registered Nurse of repair needs.
Collect specimens for testing and perform specific testing per clinic assignment, including POCT and lab draws as applicable.
Inform patient/guardian of collection process and provide brochures for specific health care needs.
Meet Joint Commission/DOH documentation requirements for the clinic area.
Complete clean sweep tool weekly.
Patient Flow and Unit Efficiency
Help maintain a neat, orderly environment.
Assist with preparation of the exam room to receive patients.
Prioritize tasks and special requests; complete all tasks or report inability to complete them.
Maintain PAR levels by obtaining equipment and supplies as needed.
Monitor the waiting room and keep families informed of delays; provide directions to lab, radiology, cafeteria, etc.
Identify children/families with special needs (e.g., child on stretcher, oxygen use, isolation).
Communication
Contribute to a positive work environment.
Confer with personnel about unanticipated or unfamiliar problems.
Greet patient/family, adjust communication style to meet educational needs, address anxiety, and adapt to personalities.
Maintain a courteous, calm, comforting, and professional demeanor with patient/guardian, multidisciplinary team members, and clinic personnel.
Report concerns or complaints to the Clinic Manager.
Laboratory Competency
Perform, evaluate, and report QC protocol; identify and resolve QC failures; document resolutions; report problems to main lab or supervisory staff.
Participate in continuing education opportunities and perform competency and proficiency challenges promptly.
Process specimens by centrifugation, allocating, sorting into specific test areas, and coordinating pick‑up and delivery of specimens for Children’s Hospital, Quest, and reference labs.
Investigate and handle improperly labeled specimens, requisition problems, and inadequate specimens.
Answer general information and specimen requirement questions; route technical questions to appropriate areas.
Monitor and maintain daily records of laboratory equipment; order routine lab/POCT inventory and supplies.
Collect blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary method; conduct routine laboratory tests such as urine dipstick, glucose, A1C.
Self‑Responsibility
Follow directions precisely and maintain confidentiality.
Attend in‑services; be active in personal educational development; develop annual goals and education program with supervisor; complete CHEX requirements.
Maintain satisfactory time and attendance.
Complete all Occupational Health requirements per policy and procedure.
Maintain certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
Maintain any other certification or licensure required by jurisdiction (e.g., DC, Maryland, Virginia).
