Position Summary Will be part of a team training and guiding fourth‑year veterinary students, interns, residents, and veterinary technician students on their path toward a professional career in veterinary medicine. As a member of the service you will be performing quality medicine at its highest levels and standards while operating and maintaining advanced equipment associated with these procedures. Technicians in these positions are essential in the organization of the service and patient care assisting with examinations, specimen collection, diagnostic procedures, treatments, anesthesia, and surgeries.
Duties & Responsibilities
Patient care management and treatments including collection of blood, urine, cystocentesis or catheterization.
Collection and preparation of tissue, cellular, or microbiological samples by skin scraping or impressions.
Routine laboratory test procedures and radiology including settings, positioning, processing, and safety.
Intravenous and arterial catheterization; administration and application of treatments, drugs, fluids, medications, and immunological agents by oral, parenteral, and injectable routes.
Placement of intra‑nasal and intra‑gastric tubes; dental and surgical assistance; resuscitative procedures.
Application of splints, slings, and appropriate wound dressings; external supportive care in severe wound and burn cases.
Entering proper charges for cases, submitting and checking lab work and imaging results through the Hospital computer system.
Professional communication with doctors and students concerning workflow, time limitations, and patient status.
Medical record keeping and oversight of patient management by Veterinary Assistants.
Minimum Qualifications Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate.
Preferred Qualifications Hands‑on experience as an LVT working within an Oncology unit of a small animal hospital.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Ability to manage stressful situations.
Phlebotomy on small or large animals.
Manual calculation of basic formulas for weight conversions and medication dose conversions.
Knowledge of large and small animal anatomy.
Physical Demands
Lifts and carries up to 50 pounds.
Sit, stand, stoop, bend, and walk intermittently during the day on hard floor surfaces.
Uses manual dexterity to work accurately with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large heavy objects/containers/machinery.
Wears all protective gear including mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety goggles, etc.
Works for long periods with arms extended.
