Pathologist's Assistant – AP – 20 Hours, Evenings – Needham
Discover the opportunity to work with Atrius Health, part of the Optum family, in our eastern Massachusetts practice. We seek a dedicated Pathologist's Assistant to support complex surgical pathology procedures.
Summary Under the general supervision of a Pathologist, utilizes specialized training to perform complex laboratory procedures that would otherwise be performed by a Pathologist. Responsible for grossing and dissecting a wide variety of surgical pathology specimens ranging from biopsies to complex specimens. In collaboration with the pathologist, selects appropriate diagnostic sections for histologic processing.
Essential Functions
Conduct gross examination of human tissue surgical specimens. Perform specimen accessioning, describe gross anatomic features via dictation, and dissect surgical specimens.
In collaboration with the pathologist, select appropriate diagnostic sections for histologic processing and prepare tissues using proper procedures.
Review cases with a pathologist upon sign-out when necessary. Consult with co-workers and histology staff as needed.
Participate in quality assurance initiatives and contribute improvement ideas for laboratory operations.
Maintain detailed records of all specimen dissections and dictations.
Assist in the compilation of reports for surgical pathology.
Label and store gross tissue specimens.
Properly maintain equipment and keep the surgical pathology suite clean.
Refer to training checklists and competency assessments; may assist in specimen processing during downtime.
Adhere to all laboratory policies and procedures, including compliance, HIPAA, CQI, OSHA, and accreditation guidelines.
Perform all functions in compliance with federal, state, and local agencies, company policies, and CAP.
Non-Essential Functions Perform other duties as needed. Any duties not listed above are considered non‑essential.
Minimum Requirements
Education:
Graduate of a NAACLS approved training program or bachelor’s degree with concentration in a biological or allied health discipline and three years experience as a Pathologist's Assistant under direct supervision of a Pathologist. Master’s degree in pathology preferred.
Skills and Experience:
Excellent dissection technical skills; extensive knowledge of basic sciences, especially anatomy, and knowledge of surgical pathology and medical terminology; ability to summarize complex clinical data; knowledge of histologic procedures; proficiency with medical and surgical instruments; ability to work independently; strong professional attitude and judgment.
Compensation The annual range for this role is $90,640.00 to $135,960.00, based on full‑time employment. Pay is based on factors including local labor markets, education, experience, certifications, etc. Atrius Health complies with all applicable minimum wage laws.
