Base pay range $140.00/hr - $150.00/hr
Our client, a leading software company, is seeking an expert, agile, and business-focused Associate General Counsel to join its Legal team. In this role, you will serve as a trusted advisor to stakeholders across the organization, proactively identifying, managing, and mitigating legal risk. You will partner with a collaborative, high-performing Legal team that works closely with the business to support strategic initiatives. This position has a strong focus on employment law and Human Resources counseling, litigation and investigations, and company-wide compliance initiatives, including Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG). The Associate General Counsel will report to the Vice President, Deputy General Counsel, Compliance & Litigation.
Please note this is an onsite, 3-month contract role with a possibility to conversion in Redwood City, CA. Pay will be $140-$150/hr. Key Responsibilities
Provide day-to-day legal guidance to Human Resources and business leaders on global employment law matters, including hiring, performance management, investigations, accommodations, leaves of absence, and terminations.
Draft, review, and update employment agreements, policies, handbooks, and HR procedures to ensure compliance with applicable local and international labor laws.
Manage and advise on workplace investigations involving misconduct, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and policy violations.
Partner with global HR teams to promote consistent application of employment policies across regions while accounting for local legal requirements.
Support strategic HR initiatives such as workforce planning, organizational restructuring, employee engagement programs, and ESG-related efforts.
Advise on sensitive employee‑relations matters and disciplinary actions to mitigate legal and business risk.
Monitor changes in employment laws across multiple jurisdictions and communicate relevant impacts to HR and leadership.
Develop and deliver training programs for HR and management on employment law, compliance, and best practices.
Advise on employee benefits, compliance obligations, and leave‑of‑absence regulations across global jurisdictions.
Manage complex litigation, including employment-related matters, regulatory issues, and investigations, while overseeing external counsel.
Lead and support cross‑functional compliance initiatives, including compensation updates, contingent workforce compliance, and other proactive compliance priorities, including responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI).
Ensure compliance with privacy, data protection, and personnel file requirements (e.g., GDPR and local data‑retention rules).
Collaborate closely with colleagues across Corporate, Commercial, and IP & Product legal teams to address compliance and litigation priorities and reduce enterprise risk.
Education & Experience Requirements
J.D. or equivalent from an accredited law school; active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
7–10 years of relevant experience in a law firm and/or in‑house legal department
Strong background in employment law counseling with litigation and investigation experience
Demonstrated in‑house experience advising on HR, compliance, privacy, and employment‑related risk
Experience supporting SaaS or technology‑driven organizations preferred
Experience using compliance and ethics management systems, including
Navex EthicsPoint , strongly preferred
Excellent judgment with strong risk‑assessment skills
Proactive, self‑directed, and solution‑oriented
Clear, concise, and practical communicator
Empathetic partner to the business with a collaborative mindset
Confident leader with the presence to engage senior stakeholders
Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple complex matters concurrently
Agile and process‑oriented, with the ability to scale and operationalize workflows
