Senior Hardware Systems Engineer – Samsara
We’re looking for a Senior Hardware Systems Engineer to join our fast‑growing product line and team. In the day‑to‑day, you will be responsible for driving the EE aspects of the architecture and design of products based on thorough feasibility, design, and cost studies encompassing key component selection, thermals, antenna, etc. We have a tremendous amount of telemetry and access to customers that help guide our design process, and you will work directly with them to design the right product. We run a collaborative process working closely with Product Management, PD, FW, EPM, NPI, and Hardware leadership to make excellent tradeoffs and choices. Throughout this process, you will share your expertise with other engineers.
Hybrid location : 3 days per week in our San Francisco, CA office and 2 days remote. Requires up to 25% travel and proximity to an international airport. Relocation assistance is provided.
Base Pay Range $165,750 – $224,500 per year

You’ll collaborate closely with cross‑functional teams—Product Management, Professional Development, Firmware, Engineering Program Management, New Product Introduction, and Hardware leadership—to make sound trade‑offs. Your work will center on component selection, thermal management, antenna design, and cost engineering while leveraging telemetry and customer data to guide decisions.

In this role, you will
Ship successful products at scale (high volume).
Conduct research on the latest silicon possibilities from top semiconductor companies.
Act as an architect: evaluate system feature trade‑offs and create system specifications for product development.
Spearhead the development process from prototyping through field validation, achieving performance, cost, and schedule goals.
Manage partnerships with external JDM companies, certification labs, and consultants to design, validate, certify, and manufacture quality products.
Champion and embed Samsara’s cultural principles—Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team—at scale globally.
Minimum requirements
5+ years of experience shipping high‑volume hardware programs with ODM and JDM partners.
Systems design expertise: chipset/SoC selection, power optimization, antennas/RF, batteries, sensors, PCB design, etc.
Proven record navigating trade‑offs between design, manufacturability, schedule, and cost.
Experience across diverse systems (automotive, indoor/outdoor industrial) with low‑power wireless (LTE, BLE, WiFi, GPS), embedded AI/ML, imaging, sensors, etc.
Proven record of system bring‑up/debug—including desense, validation, power.
BS or MS in Electrical Engineering or related field.
Ability to travel up to 25% when needed.
Strong collaborative skills with cross‑functional teams and drive independent work.
Excellent written and verbal communication in English.
Preferred qualifications
Experience with certifications and testing in industrial and automotive settings (ISO16750, AECQ100, etc.).
Schematic and layout experience in Altium and Cadence Allegro.
Systems design with cameras and extreme environmental conditions.
Experience with design for supply, design for reliability/testing, design for manufacture.
Samsara’s Compensation Philosophy Samsara’s compensation program delivers Total Direct Compensation—base salary plus bonus/variable and restricted stock units (RSUs)—at or above market. The yearly base salary range for this position is $165,750–$224,500. Eligible hires receive a new‑hire RSU award at time of hire and additional RSU refresh grants annually. Performance‑based equity awards may be above‑market.
