The Psychiatrist will provide comprehensive on‑site psychiatric services to incarcerated individuals at the Mercer County Correction Center. This role is responsible for psychiatric evaluations, diagnosis, medication management, crisis intervention, and ongoing treatment of individuals with mental health conditions in a correctional setting.
The Psychiatrist will work closely with correctional healthcare staff, psychologists, social workers, nursing teams, and custody personnel to ensure safe, ethical, and compliant delivery of mental healthcare services.
Key Responsibilities Clinical Psychiatric Services
Conduct comprehensive on‑site psychiatric evaluations and assessments
Diagnose mental illnesses and behavioral health conditions
Develop, implement, and update individualized psychiatric treatment plans
Prescribe, manage, and monitor psychotropic medications
Crisis & Acute Care
Provide psychiatric crisis intervention as required
Assess suicide risk, violence risk, and mental health acuity
Support stabilization of acute psychiatric episodes
Care Coordination
Collaborate with psychologists, social workers, nurses, and correctional staff
Participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning and case reviews
Ensure continuity of psychiatric care during incarceration
Documentation & Compliance
Maintain accurate, timely medical and psychiatric documentation
Ensure compliance with New Jersey correctional healthcare standards
Follow all applicable laws, regulations, and ethical standards
Education Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
Licensure & Certification
Active and unrestricted New Jersey Medical License (Required)
Board Certification in Psychiatry (Required)
Experience
Minimum 3 years of direct correctional mental healthcare experience
Experience providing psychiatric care to incarcerated populations
