Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant – Rheumatology (Full‑time, Days)
Our outpatient Rheumatology department welcomes a dedicated Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant who will provide high‑quality, patient‑centered care. The role involves autonomous patient encounters, collaboration with primary rheumatologists, and efficient use of the Epic electronic health record system.
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 5x8 days (no nights, weekends, holidays, or on‑call shifts).
Essential Functions
Demonstrate clinical expertise through patient care activities, including diagnosis and management of a wide range of rheumatologic health problems.
Take responsibility for the health outcomes of an assigned patient population.
Consult with collaborating physicians and other health professionals within the area of clinical expertise.
Develop and implement educational programs for patients, families, and staff.
Mentor graduate students in advanced practice and patient‑care skills.
Actively engage in quality‑improvement initiatives and research related to rheumatology.
Additional Responsibilities
Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including health histories and physical examinations.
Provide direct clinical care and management of patient treatment plans.
Prescribe and order medications, laboratory tests, imaging, and procedures within clinical privileges.
Determine patient needs for additional care and facilitate referrals to allied disciplines.
Deliver educational instruction to patients and families.
Document all care, education, and procedures in the electronic medical record.
Serve as a consultant to other disciplines on matters of rheumatologic expertise.
Integrate research‑based knowledge into clinical decision‑making.
Model a professional image in appearance, conduct, and presentation.
Advocate for patients, families, coworkers, and the community.
Maintain current certifications and continuing‑education requirements for licensure and privileging.
Represent the department on committees, task forces, and quality‑improvement projects.
Develop and deliver teaching strategies for patients, families, and staff.
Participate in programs addressing ongoing education needs of staff.
Serve as a preceptor and role model to students and new clinicians.
Provide formal education to internal and external groups related to rheumatology expertise.
Participate in quality‑improvement and research initiatives for the specific patient population.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree from an accredited School of Nursing or a Master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
Current license as a Registered Nurse or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in Illinois (or current Physician Assistant license in Illinois).
Certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse from a national certifying body accepted by the Illinois APRN Board; if licensed as a PA, completion of the accredited program and current state license.
Credentialed and privileged through Northwestern Medicine’s Medical Staff Office.
BLS/CPR certification issued by the American Heart Association.
Minimum of two (2) years of experience in advanced practice (APP) practice.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience in rheumatology.
