Summary The Port Captain is responsible for overseeing the safe, efficient, and regulatory‑compliant operation of Manson’s tug fleet. The Port Captain serves as a key liaison between vessel operations, equipment department, and shoreside management and plays a critical role in maintaining service reliability, compliance, and safety standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Supervise day‑to‑day operations of tugboats, ensuring safe and efficient vessel performance in line with company standards and regulatory requirements.

Manage tugboat crew schedules including logistical support.

Support the creation and maintenance of operational and equipment budgets.

Coordinate with port authorities, pilots, terminals, and clients to manage tug assignments and job scheduling.

Perform regular vessel checks to ensure they are in good condition, meet safety standards, and that the crew operate effectively.

Ensure fleetwide compliance with regulatory agencies, including USCG, ABS, OSHA, EM‑385.

Ensure fleetwide compliance with internal company standards.

Manage fleetwide training and licensing.

Investigate incidents and ensure that authorized and company personnel are promptly notified, and required documentation is completed.

Participate in project planning efforts to ensure work is planned and executed in a safe, compliant manner.

Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum 5–10 years of hands‑on experience operating or managing tugboats.

Experience in a supervisory or shoreside role (Port Captain, Port Engineer, Marine Superintendent) is a plus.

Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to work effectively across departments and with external agencies.

Valid U.S. Driver’s License.

US Coast Guard license preferred.

Job Location Based out of our Seattle, WA office with routine travel to ports, terminals, and vessels along the West Coast.

Physical Demands Position is primarily an office position, performs work at a desk. The employee is frequently required to sit for extended periods of time. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, use stairs, ladders, and step stools and reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to get onboard tugboats and other small boats.
