Physical Security Specialist - Uniformed
Summary: This position is located within the Police Service of the VA Medical Center in Washington, D.C. The mission of the Physical Security Specialist is to serve and protect Veterans, patients, employees, contractors, volunteers, affiliates, visitors, and others who frequent VA facilities. This is accomplished through crime‑prevention activities, typical law‑enforcement actions, emergency‑response capabilities, special training and tactics, weapons, equipment, and systems utilization.
Qualifications To qualify for this position—applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date, 01/02/2026. Applicants may qualify based on experience, education, or a combination:
Specialized Experience
– One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS‑07, including activities such as providing physical security, ensuring compliance with security procedures, applying knowledge of security regulations, utilizing security equipment, and performing law‑enforcement assignments.
Education
– A master’s or equivalent graduate degree, or two full years of graduate education in a field related to physical security, with documented transcripts.
Combination
– Equivalent combinations of graduate education and specialized experience to meet total experience requirements.
Valid unrestricted state driver’s license and medically qualified to operate a motor vehicle.
Firearm and training requirements: VA Police Officers must carry agency‑approved firearms while on duty and maintain qualification. All candidates must attend an 8‑10 week training course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center and pass a medical, psychological, and character investigation. The role requires moderate to arduous physical exertion and includes the ability to perform essential functions without risk to self or others.
Duties
Evaluates risk and develops procedures and physical security measures designed to safeguard personnel, property, and operations.
Ensures security requirements and appropriate safeguards—cameras, panic, and intrusion alarms—are implemented.
Monitors and evaluates existing and planned security projects to ensure timely and quality service conforms to statutory, contractual, and technical requirements.
Collects information and prepares reports on the facility’s compliance with VA operations and regulations.
Conducts system audits and evaluates reports of alleged security violations.
Performs law‑enforcement assignments to prevent or resolve offenses.
Initiates appropriate actions to pursue and apprehend offenders who are leaving the scene of a crime or attempting to resist arrest.
Performs bomb search functions as required by coordinating such search activities with the local bomb squad.
Conducts full investigations over prolonged periods.
Performs search and seizure for evidence to develop case information.
Establishes, develops, and maintains effective working relationships with other staff offices.
Attends security meetings to gather and share new or changed security program information with security personnel.
Develops documents, spreadsheets, graphs, reports, and presentations using automated systems and software packages.
Ensures physical security surveys are followed up promptly.
Performs related duties as required.
Designated drug‑testing position: Applicants must submit to urinalysis before appointment; refusal will result in denial.
Work Schedule: 08:00 AM – 04:30 PM, Monday – Friday. Telework not authorized. This is not a virtual position.
