Executive Underwriter – Commercial Surety
Zurich North America is seeking an experienced commercial surety underwriter to join our Surety Team in the NY/NJ Metropolitan region. The role is based in NYC or Parsippany on a hybrid schedule (3 days a week in office). The successful candidate will analyze and underwrite a book of new and renewal business, using the Zurich Way of Underwriting Framework within delegated authority, delivering high‑level service.
Responsibilities
Analyze and underwrite complex assignments, ensuring profitable and compliant coverage.
Partner with brokers, leveraging a sales execution mindset to write profitable business.
Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities and conduct detailed opportunity assessment with key distributors.
Qualify accounts to align with the organization's appetite, balanced with sound business opportunity.
Make agent/broker/customer calls with a clear purpose and negotiate terms and conditions to close deals.
Cross‑sell other lines of business to increase product density with the account.
Participate in sales team meetings related to assigned brokers or territory.
Manage a qualified list of opportunities 90 to 120 days prior to the effective date.
Update required systems with details of broker/client visits and account status within the specified timeframe.
Serve as key contact for assigned target accounts.
Develop strong broker and client networks within industries underwritten by the Business Unit.
Contribute to development of underwriting manuals, programs, and guidelines.
Lead complex technical or long‑term projects to implement new or changed systems, programs, or products.
Investigate, recommend, and implement leading‑edge technical solutions when they meet customer needs.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent with 3+ years underwriting, finance, accounting, banking, or market‑facing experience, or 6+ years in claims or underwriting support.
Alternate pathway: A Zurich Certified Insurance Apprenticeship (associate degree) with 1+ years underwriting/facing experience, or 4+ years claims support.
Knowledge of surety line(s) of business, legal/regulatory guidelines, and time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience handling large commercial accounts.
In‑depth knowledge of surety line(s) of business and its regulatory environment.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to assess risk and strong negotiation skills.
Strong broker relationships and relationship‑building skills.
High level of customer service and proactive risk management.
Underwriting philosophy and techniques knowledge.
Location & Compensation Locations: New York, NY and Parsippany, NJ (hybrid, 3 days in office).
Full‑time.
Salary range: $122,875.00 – $201,250.00 with short‑term incentive bonus eligibility of 15%.
