The Green Mountain Horse Association (GMHA) is one of the leading equine competition and equestrian educational sites in the United States. Our mission is to provide activities for diverse equestrian disciplines and promote trail preservation, horsemanship, and youth education. As a 501 (c) (3) non‑profit, GMHA currently organizes and administers approximately 65 events annually across six different equestrian disciplines, serving 950 members.
GMHA is located on 92 acres in South Woodstock, VT, where approximately 3,500 horses and 10,000 people visit the grounds each year. GMHA plays a key role in developing and maintaining a large network of trails thanks to the generosity of private landowners.
Role Description The Executive Director will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight to ensure GMHA is able to sustainably fulfill its mission. Our ideal candidate is passionate about the equine community and has experience:
working with a board to create a strategic vision,
leading and engaging a team, and
fundraising and developing strong external partnerships.
Duties and Responsibilities Include:
Work with board members and staff to develop, evolve, and operationalize GMHA’s mission and vision.
Develop and manage GMHA’s budget, in collaboration with the board finance committee and business manager.
Lead, engage, coach, develop, and retain a high‑performing staff.
Work with staff to evaluate, identify, and implement programming and events that meet community needs and are financially sustainable.
Develop and execute marketing and communications strategies to increase community awareness and earned revenue.
Develop and secure fundraising to achieve a balanced budget via donor solicitations, grant writing, corporate sponsorships, and other fund development strategies.
Oversee staff and contractors to ensure well‑maintained grounds and high‑quality events. May need to step in for hands‑on work, maintaining grounds and/or supporting events from time to time.
Represent GMHA locally and nationally, building relationships with landowners and key partners throughout the equine industry.
Other duties as may be required or requested.
Qualifications:
5+ years of experience as an executive director of a small, community‑focused non‑profit, or an equivalent combination of skills and experience.
Leadership skills with the ability to coach, manage, develop, align, and inspire high‑performance teams.
Operational and management skills with the ability to manage budgets, manage projects, and achieve fundraising and programmatic goals.
Strategic planning skills with the ability to turn a vision into reality.
Ability to multitask and regularly shift between proactive and reactive, and strategic and operational work. Willingness to pitch in and help with hands‑on work as needed.
Persuasive and passionate communicator with demonstrated collaboration skills.
Passion for the equine community.
