We are seeking an experienced Commercial Underwriter to join a financial services firm in the northern VA area. As a Senior Associate within the firm, this individual will evaluate and manage credit risk efforts across an entire lending portfolio of small business borrowers. This role is responsible for analyzing financial statements, assessing borrower risk, and making sound credit recommendations in alignment with company policy, regulatory standards, and growth objectives.
Base pay range $120,000.00/yr - $150,000.00/yr
Schedule Hybrid
Compensation 120,000-150,000 + bonus
Key Responsibilities
Analyze and underwrite small business credit requests, including new loans, renewals, and modifications
Review financial statements, tax returns, cash flow, collateral, and guarantor strength
Perform global cash flow analysis and debt service coverage calculations
Assess borrower risk and prepare clear, well-supported credit memoranda
Ensure compliance with internal credit policies and regulatory requirements
Collaborate with relationship managers, loan officers, and closing teams
Monitor existing loan portfolios and identify emerging credit risks
Support portfolio management, covenant tracking, and annual reviews
Participate in credit committee discussions as needed
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business, or a related field
5–7+ years of commercial underwriting experience, with a strong focus on small business lending, credit risk, or financial due diligence
Experience underwriting loans typically ranging from $5m-50m, including term loans, lines of credit, equipment financing, etc.
SBA 7(a) and/or 504 loans (preferred)
Strong understanding of financial statements and cash flow analysis
Knowledge of credit risk principles and underwriting best practices
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in banking, credit unions, fintech, or alternative lenders
Familiarity with SBA SOP guidelines
Experience with portfolio risk monitoring and stress testing
Proficiency with underwriting and loan management systems
Credit training or certifications (formal credit programs a plus)
