Summary Apellis is entering into an exciting time with its first ever product launch in rare diseases three years ago, a second in 2023 in the retina space, and now a third recent launch in nephrology this year. The company has built a comprehensive set of services working with Patients, Caregivers, Healthcare Providers, Specialty Distribution Channels, and Market Access/Reimbursement teams in rare disease and will be doing the same work in the eye care market in anticipation for our next launch.

The VP, U.S. Value, Access & Policy is responsible for overseeing a cross‑functional team that includes all payer and provider access strategy, policy insights & implications, strategic pricing & contracting, contract operations and government pricing, payer and provider account teams, and trade. Located in Waltham, MA reporting directly to the EVP, Global Commercial, this individual will have a high visibility role within the organization with a new launch in 2025 and multiple future launches expected. This is a highly strategic senior level role and is expected to be able to influence across the matrix including the Apellis Executive Committee and occasionally the Board of Directors.

Job Location: Ability to travel/work at the Company's headquarters 3 days a week.

Roles and Responsibilities

Provide leadership and direction to existing cross‑functional members of the Value, Access & Policy group

Be a strategic thinker, while knowing how to tactically and operationally implement the strategy in both the payers as well as trade/distribution channels

Possess specialty pharmacy, expert level buy and bill coverage and reimbursement background and knowledge

Build and lead the teams, processes, and outside partnerships (i.e. specialty pharmacies, distribution partners) that best allows for a positive patient journey when onboarding with Apellis products

Oversee the development of appropriate metrics and processes for monitoring and analyzing data from our vendor partners (specialty pharmacy, specialty distributors, etc.)

Coach, mentor and develop direct reports as well as cross‑functional members of the team (dotted line reports)

Monitor and measure customer feedback, internal performance data and market needs, and act quickly to challenges, while also planning proactively to improve process and the overall patient journey

Effectively work with cross functional teams, Marketing, Account Directors, Medical Affairs, Community Liaison team, Key Customer Manager team as well as various levels of leadership

Ensure field teams are appropriately educated and work collaboratively with the patient support model, patient programs and resources available for HCPS, patients and caregivers.

Collaborate with Legal and Compliance stakeholders to ensure compliant development and execution of patient services

Know and understand the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and work with cross‑functional partners (including the Executive Committee, outside counsel, and the Board of Directors) to understand and implement strategies that benefit Apellis products and patient access to novel products

Experience

Minimum 15+ years overall experience with a minimum of 3 years’ experience at the VP leadership level related to leading and managing market access teams and responsibilities; additional commercial experience a plus (marketing, sales, patient services, trade, business development)

Experience in working with a commercial organization focused on building a go‑to‑market model and/or launching multiple products

Prior leadership roles need to be in ‘player‑coach’ setting, building programs and processes alongside the team

Must have a general management mindset and is able to lead a team through ambiguity

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Senior level developed leadership skills and general management mind‑set are a must with proven ability of influencing the organizations understanding of what processes and requirements are needed both short and long term, building while also executing

Is willing and able to challenge the status quo, finding new ways to help the organization to be successful and consistently pushing him/herself and their teams to think differently

Positive track record of leading and executing processes for the field‑based organization(s)

Willingness to roll‑up his/her sleeves; not dependent on support staff

Operates with a high sense of urgency and can be agile to meet organizational needs quickly

Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills

Demonstrated ability to work with little or no supervision, but with the good judgment to know when to involve others or ask for guidance

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to structure reports and presentations in a logical and clear manner to senior leadership team in the US and corporate senior management team

Strong interpersonal organizational and analytical skills with the ability to model business opportunities and proposals and present in PowerPoint associated, clearly identifying assumptions, benefits and risks to patient access to Apellis products and services

Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks with strong attention to detail in a business with changing priorities

Meticulous approach to documentation with high focus on level of accuracy

Must be able to handle highly sensitive and confidential information. Discretion is of utmost importance

Demonstrated ability to set an example and maintain a positive culture and environment for company

Excellent computer skills required including Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Advanced level of Microsoft Excel is preferred

Pay Information Base salary for this role will consider multiple factors, including but not limited to, candidate qualifications, relevant expertise, specialized skills, and industry experience in complement-targeted therapies. The targeted base salary range for this position is $298,000-$447,000. This range represents the base salary only and reflects Apellis’ commitment to competitive compensation within the biopharmaceutical industry. The final salary offered may vary based on individual qualifications, business needs, and current market conditions.
