Responsibilities The role of a professional clinical nurse is unique and essential to patient care.
Advocate
Practices in accordance with the patient‑centered care model
Develops an individualized, age‑specific, culturally sensitive nursing plan of care based on the nursing process
Incorporates patient advocacy into the plan of care
Uses a team approach to develop and achieve daily patient‑centered individualized care goals
Acknowledges and values the contributions of significant others as part of the care plan
Identifies potential conflict situations and facilitates resolution using established communication channels
Promotes and strives to protect the health, safety and rights of the patient
Protects patients by maintaining a safe environment
Clinical Expert
Advances clinical expertise through ongoing education and specialty certification when eligible
Continuously enhances skills to ensure the highest quality patient care
Shares knowledge by educating team members, patients and students
Demonstrates critical thinking by integrating theoretical knowledge to pose relevant clinical questions when evidence and practice differ
Identifies priorities, sets realistic and measurable goals, prescribes and implements interventions safely and timely
Develops and implements individualized education plans using suitable instructional materials and methods
Evaluates and documents patient responses to interventions, refining the plan of care based on findings
Identifies situations requiring further intervention and escalates appropriately; consults experts when needed
Participates in team goal formation, implementation and evaluation
Appropriately delegates and supervises interventions to implement the plan of care
Conveys complete, timely and accurate information at hand‑off at bedside or any hand‑off
Adheres to ethical standards of practice
Community Volunteer
Participates annually in Northwestern Memorial organized volunteer initiatives or on‑the‑loaf projects

Consistently demonstrates interpersonal connections with patients and families from introduction through discharge
Proactively responds to patient concerns such as speaking to patients about possible delays in plan of care
Treats patients, families, visitors and staff with respect and dignity
Facilitates recovery and helps ensure a peaceful death for patients

Member of a professional organization or active on a Northwestern Memorial committee or taskforce at the hospital‑wide, departmental, or unit level
Demonstrates accountability and collaborative practice with co‑workers, other disciplines, and departments

Serves as a community mentor for team members
Serves as a preceptor for new team members
Participates in peer feedback process by conducting constructive assessment and evaluation of peer performance

Qualifications Required
Graduate of an NLN accredited school/college of nursing
Baccalaureate degree in Nursing or higher
Current State of Illinois Registered Professional Nurse license
Basic Life Support (BLS) and CPR certification through the American Heart Association
Analytic ability (conceptual and quantitative)
Oral, listening, and written communication skills
Strong human relation skills to interact effectively and collaborate with others in difficult situations
Proficiency in data entry using a keyboard
Preferred
Experience in a specific clinical area
Nursing specialty certification, if eligible
