What we’re looking for Nexamp is growing our Electrical Engineering team and hiring a Lead Electrical Engineer. You will be responsible for reviewing PV and ESS project designs, providing technical expertise in interconnection, construction, and assisting in the commissioning of distributed energy resources (DERs). This role requires an Electrical Engineer experienced with electrical infrastructure up to 345 kV, in‑depth knowledge of protective relaying and controls, and a strong working knowledge of applicable national codes including NEC and NESC. You will also work closely with the Director of Electrical Engineering on department initiatives and process improvements.

We are ideally supporting hybrid work out of our Boston, Chicago or DC offices, but can support remote work if needed. You will report directly to the Director, Electrical Engineering.

What you’ll do

Specify and review equipment shop drawings for switchgear, transformers, reclosers and other major electrical equipment.

Perform advanced electrical modeling in ETAP and AmpCalc to coordinate system protection, determine fault‑duty ratings, calculate arc‑flash hazards, and run step/touch grounding analysis.

Manage scope of work for third‑party electrical engineers, including studies; protection coordination, power flow, arc flash, Step/touch grounding analysis, PSCAD and PSSE modeling, and substation design.

Provide technical support to Nexamp Development, Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) and Operations & Maintenance (O&M) departments for the entire life cycle of a project including development, permitting, construction, and asset management phases.

Support the Project Engineering and Design Engineering team:

Review draft construction set drawings for compliance with Nexamp and NEC.

Assist with code interpretation and RFI responses.

Review grounding studies and thermal ampacity studies.

Assist with equipment due diligence.

Support the Grid Integration and Design Engineering team:

Review, analyze, and interpret utility pre‑screen reports, System Impact Studies, Interconnection Service Agreements, and utility negotiations. Review test procedures, code interpretation, protective settings development.

Implement non‑wires alternatives, selective curtailment, and other grid‑edge technologies.

Train and mentor junior engineering personnel.

Complete project design reviews; review single‑line diagrams, three‑line diagrams, and site layout designs for compliance with code, best practices, and utility requirements.

Respond to RFIs on active construction projects as required.

Provide technical support to Nexamp commissioning:

Review MV and HV equipment tests and factory tests.

Develop mitigation plans for non‑performance to establish safe operation.

Review RDB files and relay test reports.

Certify mechanical completion on construction‑complete projects.

Lead new product research and implementation, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), best practices, and assist the Director in identifying process improvements and leading initiatives.

What you’ll bring

10+ years of electrical engineering experience

4+ years of PV experience

PE certification

Utility‑scale design and HV substation experience (preferred)

NABCEP certification (preferred)

ETAP, SKM, or AmpCalc modeling experience

Familiarity with AcSELerator and RDB generation

Familiarity with PSSE, Aspen, or PSCAD modeling experience

Expertise in industry‑standard design codes such as NEC, IBC, IFC, NESC, and other standards

Strong knowledge of electrical principles, including medium‑voltage distribution and protection system coordination

Knowledge of construction means and methods

Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one

Ability to work as part of a fast‑paced, multi‑disciplinary team, demonstrated leadership capability of multi‑disciplinary teams

Compensation The reasonably estimated salary for this role ranges from $160,000 – $180,000. In addition to base salary, the competitive compensation package may include, depending on the role, participation in an incentive program linked to performance (e.g., annual bonus programs, non‑annual sales incentive plans, or other non‑annual incentive plans). Additionally, you may be eligible to participate in the Company’s stock option plan. Actual base salary may vary based on skill, qualifications, internal equity, performance, and geographic location.
