Overview
The Commercial Credit Manager leads a team of credit professionals in evaluating, underwriting, and managing a portfolio of commercial credit relationships. The role ensures adherence to credit policies, maintains portfolio quality, provides timely and accurate risk ratings, and collaborates with relationship managers to support business growth. Strong leadership, in‑depth credit knowledge, and informed decision‑making are essential to manage and mitigate portfolio risk.
Primary Responsibilities
Lead a team that partners proactively with the sales team and is involved throughout the deal process, from screening to approval and ongoing management.
Provide independent credit quality assessments of the bank’s largest commercial clients, identifying risks, mitigants, industry concerns, market and financial trends, and other pertinent credit issues.
Evaluate and determine ongoing credit risks and corresponding risk ratings through detailed financial statement analysis, industry assessment, collateral valuation, cash‑flow analysis, and repayment ability.
Oversee the day‑to‑day activities of the Commercial Credit team, ensuring quality and efficiency of underwriting and credit‑monitoring activities.
Mentor Analysts, Associates and junior members, reviewing final work before submission to credit authorities.
Underwrite, monitor, or guide on complex credit structures as required.
Serve as the point person for assigning customer relationships, prioritizing work and monitoring workflow for adequate coverage.
Meet with clients when appropriate and prepare thoughtful risk assessments of customers on an ongoing basis.
Provide ongoing training, maintain work logs and prepare monthly productivity reports and other reports for management.
Resolve policy, procedure, accounting or credit issues and maintain in‑depth knowledge of accounting pronouncements affecting bank credits.
Recruit, develop, and retain a highly talented Commercial Credit team.
Exercise managerial authority regarding staffing, performance appraisals, promotions, salary recommendations, performance management and terminations.
Maintain compliance with the company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls, implement and enhance internal controls, and identify risk‑related issues requiring escalation.
Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
Maintain internal control standards, including implementation of audit points and responding to external regulators.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Scope of Responsibilities The role covers Corporate/Institutional segments (FIG, Fund Banking, Institutional/REIT, Large Corporate, Leveraged Lending). Commercial Credit delivers credit assessment from initial relationship analysis to material modifications or restructurings and ongoing monitoring, ensuring accurate completion of risk rating scorecards and financial statement spreads.
Education and Experience Required
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related discipline with 9 years of related experience and 3 years of supervisory experience (or equivalent 13 years of higher education and work experience).
Strong analytical and decision‑making abilities.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Proficiency in financial modeling and risk assessment tools.
Experience with complex credit structures and syndicated loans.
Ability to lead cross‑functional teams and manage multiple projects concurrently.
Familiarity with credit risk rating models and loan/portfolio management systems.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Education and Experience Preferred
MBA, Advanced Degree or CPA.
Experience with Capital IQ, FactSet, and Bloomberg.

Compensation Pay range: $194,500 – $324,100 per year (USD).
