The Director of Perioperative Surgical Services is responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of surgical departments, including the operating room (OR), sterile processing department (SPD), and post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). This role is crucial in ensuring exceptional patient care and adherence to regulatory standards. The position entails managing teams, overseeing quality assurance, financial management, scheduling, and collaborating with both clinical and executive stakeholders. Key Responsibilities of the Director of Perioperative Services:

This leadership role encompasses the strategic oversight and operational management of the surgical services department, which includes the OR, SPD, pre-anesthesia testing (PAT), pre-operative area, PACU, and scheduling. The focus is on improving patient safety, optimizing surgical outcomes, and ensuring high-quality surgical services while complying with regulatory requirements.

Strategic Leadership:
  • Formulate and execute the strategic vision and objectives for the surgical services department in alignment with the organization's mission.
  • Work alongside executive leadership to establish priorities and initiate projects that enhance the quality of surgical care.
Operational Oversight:
  • Ensure the smooth and effective functioning of all surgical service areas, including the OR, SPD, PAT, pre-op, PACU, and scheduling.
  • Evaluate workflows and processes to pinpoint areas for enhancement and implement best practices to boost operational efficiency.
Team Management:
  • Guide, mentor, and develop a multidisciplinary team comprising managers, nurses, surgical technicians, and support staff.
  • Encourage a culture of collaboration, accountability, and ongoing improvement among team members.
  • Conduct performance assessments and promote professional development opportunities for staff.
Quality Assurance and Patient Safety:
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and accreditation requirements related to surgical services.
  • Design, implement, and monitor quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient safety and surgical outcomes.
  • Analyze performance metrics and patient outcome data to identify trends and formulate action plans for improvement.
Financial Management:
  • Develop and oversee the surgical services budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and optimal resource utilization.
  • Assess financial performance, identify cost-saving opportunities, and manage procurement processes for surgical supplies and equipment.
Scheduling and Resource Allocation:
  • Manage the scheduling of surgical procedures to ensure optimal use of OR resources and staff.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nursing staff to coordinate surgical schedules and availability.
Regulatory Compliance:
  • Ensure adherence to all relevant local, state, and federal regulations, as well as accreditation standards.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, best practices, and regulatory changes impacting surgical services.
Stakeholder Engagement:
  • Act as a liaison between surgical services and other departments, promoting collaboration and communication throughout the organization.
  • Engage with physicians and other stakeholders to gather feedback and address concerns regarding surgical services.
Education and Training:
  • Develop and implement ongoing education and training programs for surgical services staff to maintain competencies and enhance care delivery.
  • Collaborate with educational institutions to support the clinical training of nursing and surgical technology students.
Qualifications:
  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or a related field is required; a Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Experience: A minimum of 7-10 years in surgical services management or perioperative nursing is preferred, with a strong emphasis on leadership roles.
  • Licensure/Certification: A current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Texas is required; certification in perioperative nursing (CNOR) is preferred.
