The University of Akron (UA) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences (BCAS). The University seeks a collaborative and decisive leader who is committed to promoting excellence in all facets of a liberal arts education.
The Dean of BCAS is the chief academic, fiscal, and administrative officer of the College, reporting to the Senior Vice President and Provost. The Dean has responsibility for BCAS’s instructional, research and outreach environment, including oversight of its $32.8M budget and student academic affairs. The Dean is expected to provide vocal and visionary leadership on behalf of the College, to embrace the mission of public education in an urban environment, and to help create and implement a framework for excellence within the College that incorporates a sense of collaboration and inclusiveness at its core. This deanship is an exciting opportunity for an entrepreneurial and dynamic leader, as BCAS seeks to grow enrollment while it undertakes efforts to enhance collaboration across colleges and to develop innovative curricular pathways for students with shifting career needs and goals.
The University of Akron is one of Ohio’s most influential public urban research universities, conducting high-quality research in focused areas of excellence, contributing to the vitality of the local economy, and providing a workforce highly trained in diverse disciplines. The College, the largest at UA, enrolls roughly 3155 undergraduates and 347 graduate students in 18 schools and departments, 13 centers and institutes, and three interdisciplinary programs. BCAS employs approximately 182 full-time faculty and 40 staff members. The College’s educational programs span five divisions – Education, Fine Arts, Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. The departments, programs, research labs, and centers yield both applied and basic knowledge that provides the foundation for a strong liberal arts education for students seeking degrees both within BCAS and across the University of Akron campus.
Candidates much possess a doctorate in a discipline traditionally represented in the college within Arts & Sciences, currently hold the rank of tenured Professor, and have a record of scholarly achievement and academic accomplishments appropriate to the individual’s academic discipline. Candidates must have a sustained record of successful administrative and managerial experience within an academic environment.
