A Faith That Does Justice
A Faith That Does Justice is an interfaith organization that challenges people to experience God by living their faith intentionally in service to others. We do this by showing how unjust societal structures marginalize people and by acting to help those in need. Our vision is people intentionally living their faith in action.
Our strategic focus includes:
Acting to help those in need with a particular emphasis on immigrant populations.
Showing how unjust systems marginalize people and encouraging our followers to put their faith into action to address injustice.
Our programs include:
Fireside Chats – We explore issues of current social justice interest.
The Weekly Word – A weekly email that gives voice to different faith leaders across the country who discuss social justice issues from a faith perspective that reaches more than 4,000 people.
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program – We provide free virtual and in‑person instruction for English language learners in greater Boston in collaboration with Jewish Vocational Service (JVS).
Grab & Go meal program – A food preparation and distribution program for people experiencing homelessness and food insecurity in downtown Boston.
Spanish Mass – A gathering for the Spanish‑speaking community for mass and dinner for immigrants who do not speak English.
Newsletter – A weekly spiritual reflection by qualified theologians as well as social justice and event news circulated weekly by email to more than 4,000 followers.
Continual learning opportunities – Virtual connection to our subscribers, including increased use of “live” and pre‑recorded videos on social media.
Student Relationship Manager (SRM) The SRM is a mentor to prospective, current, and former adult English Language Learners so they get the most benefit possible from participation in the ESOL program. The SRM must have strong people skills and speak English and one of the many primary languages of our students, preferably as a native. SRMs have no teaching or tutoring responsibilities.
SRMs set their own schedule for their engagement with ESOL students.
Duties
Frequent engagement by email, text, and phone calls with each student to provide recognition of their efforts and acknowledge the challenges of learning a new language.
Encouraging active and ongoing student attendance and following up with any student who is absent to offer genuine concern, help, and support in an “all out” effort to enable the students to obtain the best from the program.
Collaborating closely with teachers to ensure that all students who are registered for a class are regularly attending.
Surveying students on class content and value to the student.
Identifying health and social services needed by a student and working with the Director of the ESOL Program to refer the student to organizations providing the needed services.
Periodically meeting with the Director of the ESOL program to discuss overall student needs and resources available to them.
Providing “light weight” technical support to any student needing assistance with accessing or downloading apps required for class.
Recruiting new ESOL students.
Maintaining contact with former ESOL students and monitoring their progress.
Supporting AFTDJ public communications by relating nonconfidential student experiences and stories in support of the program.
