The Impact You Will Have Reporting to the Senior Underwriting Team Lead Midwest, this position will underwrite profitable new and renewal business to meet regional line‑of‑business targets, including global elements. You will own large accounts and clients, negotiate participation, pricing, and terms, provide training and development for the team, and act as a referral point for underwriters. You will develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers and clients and specialize as a technical lead for at least one sub‑line of business.

Responsibilities

Underwrite new and renewal accounts to meet top‑ and bottom‑line targets; negotiate price and terms with producers; proactively manage capacity.

Evaluate Natural Catastrophe accumulation, ensuring understanding of catastrophe modelling and scenario interpretation for relevant LOBs.

Underwrite International Insurance Programs for relevant LOBs.

Underwrite in line with the LoB governance framework—underwriting authorities, global MSU, underwriting guidelines, rules, and principles.

Ensure contract certainty is achieved upon inception and that global pricing tools are utilized.

Place and bind FAC reinsurance prior to policy inception.

Ensure accurate policy documentation is issued to producers (or that producers issue documentation where required).

Maintain file integrity—electronic or paper—and support policy administration and credit control processes.

Contribute to the development and execution of the regional underwriting strategy.

Train, develop, and coach less experienced staff, including underwriters.

Manage complex referrals from underwriters and spokes, re‑underwriting complex business as appropriate.

Liaise with MMC on market‑management initiatives and support acquisition of new and retention of existing business.

Represent AzC externally, fostering relationships with key producers, clients, and stakeholders such as risk managers.

Drive involvement of functional areas (MMC, ARC, Claims, Operations) in the underwriting process.

What You’ll Bring to the Role

A minimum of 5 years’ significant experience underwriting profitable inland marine business with specialized expert understanding of sub‑LoB products and portfolio.

Specialized understanding of regional/local LoB insurance markets and competitor landscape, including global elements.

Recognized relationships with brokers at the peer group level and a strong presence within the market.

Ideal candidate will have worked as an underwriter or account executive, well versed in multiple inland marine products such as construction, transportation, miscellaneous coverages, and property (builder’s risk, contractor’s equipment, motortruck cargo, physical damage, mono‑line property for small‑to‑medium risks, and scheduled property floaters).

Good understanding of legal and regulatory frameworks and experience working in a complex, global matrix organization.

Preferably a bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Insurance, Business Administration, Finance, or Economics, plus completion of a professional insurance qualification.

Ability to assess risk and natural hazards relevant to the LoB; analyze current performance against benchmarks and market dynamics.

Design, develop, and implement consistent, robust policy wordings and a comprehensive understanding of the policy administration life cycle.

Ability to analyze highly complex data from multiple sources, identifying and resolving issues proactively.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to “sell” ideas and motivate others without executive authority.

Proficiency in general office applications (PowerPoint, Excel, Word).

Willingness to utilize AI tools to enhance day‑to‑day tasks and support data‑driven decision‑making.

Compensation The annualized base pay range for this role is $103,461 – $161,017. The base salary is one component of the AzC total compensation package. Employees may also be eligible for annual performance‑based cash incentive awards.
