Power Electronics Controls Engineer, Energy Storage Join Redwood Materials as a Power Electronics Controls Engineer focused on energy storage.

About Redwood Materials Redwood Materials delivers low‑cost, large‑scale energy storage and produces battery materials in the U.S. from existing batteries, localizing a global battery supply chain that integrates recovery, reuse, and recycling. Founded in 2019, Redwood is driving the energy transition.

Essential Duties You will be an early member of a product design team, responsible for detailed power electronics design, prototype development, and launch into high‑volume production of an efficient, cost‑effective, highly manufacturable, and technologically leading‑edge power converter.

Responsibilities

Create highly accurate time‑domain control and thermal models of circuits.

Quantitatively compare and select topologies, control algorithms, semiconductors, and magnetics for high‑voltage (up to ~1,000–2,000 VDC and 480 VAC) and high‑power (10–200 kW) power converters, respecting engineering constraints.

Apply knowledge of both hard‑ and soft‑switched topologies.

Provide working understanding of microprocessor selection, electrical insulation, and thermal interface.

Contribute to critical powertrain layout, and be willing to perform board layout tasks.

Act as a self‑driven, adaptable starter in a fast‑paced environment, shaping the electrical engineering function within a new department.

Desired Qualifications

BS, MS, or PhD in Electrical Engineering with focus in power electronics.

7+ years of electrical engineering experience, preferably for mass‑production power conversion or energy storage products.

Experience designing for high‑voltage (≤ 2,000 VDC, 480 VAC).

Familiarity with efficiency optimization techniques.

Basic knowledge of control theory and embedded systems.

Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.

Experience in rapid prototype iterations based on feedback.

Deep understanding of power electronics topologies (AC/ DC, DC/ DC).

Experience with semiconductor selections, gate drive, and protection circuit design.

Mentoring skill for test technicians.

Proficiency with EE tools: oscilloscopes, network analyzers, signal generators.

Track record in medium‑to‑high volume production (10,000 units/yr or more) with hands‑on design, prototyping, and launch experience.

Ability to select circuit components for manufacturability and electrical function.

Skill in schematic capture in Altium or related CAD software.

Ability to supervise or perform detailed PCB layout in Altium or related CAD software.

Physical Requirements

Perform essential job functions safely and productively, consistent with ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state and local standards.

Maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with ADA, FMLA and other standards.

Working Conditions

Office or outdoor environment.

Work may involve exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, temperature extremes, protected by PPE.

Physical demands: climbing, standing, stooping, typing.

Occasional weekends, nights, on‑call shifts.

Occasional travel.

Compensation California Pay Range: $153,000—$248,500 USD. Position is full‑time. Compensation commensurate with experience.
