Job Description GDIT is seeking a Sr. Cloud Engineer (AWS) to support our National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) team in Rockville, MD. As a Senior Cloud Engineer, you will work closely with other innovative and savvy people to engineer custom solutions in the Cloud, collaborate regularly with product owners to deploy custom line-of-business, scientific, and high performance computing (HPC) applications, and help streamline our users' operations and processes while further adopting DevOps best practices. Candidates with a focus on innovation and automation are a plus. This role is remote, but proximity to Rockville, MD is preferred for possible meetings.
Responsibilities
Collaborate with product owners (researchers and software developers) to identify and design topologies for custom business and scientific applications on AWS as part of our custom platform.
Provide guidance for adhering to best practices for optimal and secure use of cloud technologies.
Assist development teams in migrating their products from on‑prem infrastructure to AWS, often requiring refactoring application architecture and breaking down monolithic applications into micro‑service or serverless workloads.
Train product teams in AWS cloud technologies and frameworks to set up environments, build and deploy applications, and automate operational needs.
Work with other Cloud Solutions Engineers to develop prototypes and enhance or expand fundamental capabilities offered on the platform, such as CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and containerized, serverless workloads, and high performance computing.
Participate in daily stand‑up meetings to report accomplishments, plans for the day, and any roadblocks.
Act as an AWS Cloud Subject Matter Expert (SME) on cross‑functional teams to help further the organization’s mission.
Occasionally present to team, software developer colleagues, and researchers on DevOps best practices, new and interesting cloud technologies, and solutions to challenging technical issues during Tech Talks webinars.
What You'll Need to Succeed
Technical training, certifications, and/or degree with 8+ years of related experience.
3+ years of experience with AWS (e.g., ECS, EC2, S3, Parallel Cluster, Systems Manager, Lambda).
Working knowledge of infrastructure‑as‑code (IaC) frameworks such as Terraform or CloudFormation, including writing templates and modules from scratch, and experience with configuration management frameworks.
Knowledge of containerization and hands‑on experience in containerizing software applications; experience with container orchestration and deployment platforms such as AWS ECS and AWS EKS.
Experience implementing and managing CI/CD workflows using GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or similar tools.
Experience analyzing solution components, understanding systems integration challenges, and identifying technology gaps in current components to reach future performance targets and functionality requirements in cloud infrastructure.
Experience presenting ideas to both technical and non‑technical users.
Experience writing comprehensive technical documentation.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a NIH Public Trust clearance.
Preferred Skills
Experience designing and implementing technologies using micro‑service architecture in a Federal Scientific Health Research environment.
Experience refactoring applications into cloud‑native applications.
Experience consulting scientists, researchers, and developers on designing, migrating, and optimizing their solutions on AWS services.
Within commuting distance to the Rockville, MD area is strongly preferred.
The likely salary range for this position is $123,250 - $166,750.
