Job Summary The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non‑profit, bipartisan public‑policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision-makers concerned with global security and prosperity. With a staff of roughly 250 employees, including more than 120 analysts, CSIS addresses the changing dynamics of international security across the globe. CSIS’s Development program is growing, and we are looking to hire an Associate Director of Foundation Relations to increase support from Foundations and strengthen relationships with our existing Foundation partners. The salary range for this position is $85,000 – $125,000.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Develop and implement strategies and activities to increase support from existing foundation funders and identify new potential foundation support, in partnership with the Chief Development Officer to drive fundraising strategy.
Serve as trusted, strategic advisor and partner to research programs and Department leadership on foundation strategies; partner with CSIS program staff to cultivate relationships with both current and prospective donors and support foundation fundraising on behalf of CSIS’s Executive team.
Identify new funding opportunities that align with CSIS programs through prospect research and knowledge of the foundation landscape; stay abreast of philanthropic trends and recent foundation giving.
Prepare foundation materials, including proposals, letters of inquiry, grant reports, agreements, emails, presentations, and acknowledgment letters. This includes drafting original copy, editing, and formatting as needed.
Support the planning and execution of meetings with foundation staff, research and prepare briefings for executive leadership and senior staff in advance of foundation meetings.
Work with Foundation Manager to track grant requirements and deadlines as well as contact between CSIS and its funders.
Liaise with program and finance staff to monitor grant spending and compliance.
Lead bi‑weekly Foundation strategy meetings with Development team to share updates, deconflict and develop strategies for foundation funders.
Knowledge, Education, and Experience
5-7 years of experience in Foundation relations, including foundation program contacts within relevant organizations. Strong interest in global development, international relations, and policy‑related research; ability to remain up to date on the research agendas of CSIS programs.
Excellent communication skills – written, verbal, and interpersonal – with the ability to work effectively within a diverse and driven environment.
Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite applications.
Salesforce fluency is desirable.
