Junior Counselor – Washington D.C.
Headfirst Summer Camps invites you to apply for the Junior Counselor position in Washington D.C. We design fun, intentional, and transformational camp experiences that celebrate every camper.
Pay Range $11.00 / hour (actual pay based on skills and experience)
Position Summary Junior Counselors are team players who work in any program as needed. You will assist as a co‑counselor in a group, bring camp to life with enthusiasm, and support campers of all ages.
Schedule In‑season (late June through mid‑August): 7:45 am – 3:30 pm, Monday–Friday. Pre‑season (early June): selected weekends for training and site preparation.
What You’ll Do
Bring Camp to Life
Co‑lead a group of 12‑20 campers for all curricular activities with a co‑counselor
Teach pre‑written curriculum and engage campers during break times
Implement Headfirst’s safety protocols on supervision, bathrooms, emergency medications, and camper behavior management
Co‑lead music and movement, story time, sports and games, moon bounce, bathroom & sunscreen breaks, transitions, lunch & snack
Support specialized staff during art, STEM, swim, morning and afternoon program meetings
Execute morning and afternoon carpool, welcoming each family by name with dance moves and coordinated procedures
Assist in various roles as requested (e.g., camper buddy for supervision, delivery person, assistant to leaders during weather or facility changes)
Nurture Physical, Social & Emotional Safety
Support campers’ emotional, physical, and social development through hands‑on exploration and developmentally appropriate activities
Continuously grow in camper management by learning from peers and leadership
Represent Headfirst for Families & Facility Partners
Represent the Headfirst brand daily to families at carpool and to school facility partners
Participate in caring for the camp facility and community
Be an Active Member of the Camp Team
Arrive on time, communicate schedule changes promptly, and show up consistently for campers and your team
Be flexible with assignments and support other programs on site
Start Each Day with an Open Mind
Attend and participate in daily staff meetings and weekly in‑season trainings
Bring your strengths and acknowledge growth opportunities
Handle the Curveballs
Practice resilience and adopt a “How Can I Help?” mentality that prioritizes camper experience and team success
About You Qualifications
Must be at least 16 years old.
Ability to work around small children, including sitting, standing, running, and climbing stairs for the full day.
Comfortable working in hot and outdoor environments while supervising campers for extended periods.
Can lift and carry up to 30 pounds occasionally.
Committed to the Cell‑Phone Free policy – phones stored in a locked pouch during shifts.
Excellent communication and collaborative skills.
Preferred
Leadership or teaching experience with youth.
Experience with camp or outdoor programs.
