The University of Virginia (UVA) Children’s Hospital and the Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery are seeking applications to join the faculty in the Section of Congenital Heart Surgery. Responsibilities include all aspects of clinical care for the congenital cardiac populations. The individual will join Dr. James Gangemi in a busy, comprehensive congenital heart program and preferably has a strong experience and interest in research and education. Opportunities exist for basic science and translational research as well as support for clinical research interests.

The Congenital Heart Program at UVA has been nationally ranked in USNWR for 10 consecutive years. It continues to grow throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia with formal collaborations with children’s hospitals in Norfolk and Richmond Virginia. We have a busy neonatal heart surgery program with a continually growing fetal cardiology program. We also have a busy and growing pediatric heart transplant and pediatric mechanical circulatory support program. The dedicated pediatric cardiac intensive care unit boasts 5 dually trained pediatric intensivists.

UVA Children’s was recently ranked number 1 children’s hospital in Virginia by US News and World Report for the fourth consecutive year and is nationally ranked in nine pediatric subspecialty areas. The University of Virginia Medical Center and Children’s Hospital are located adjacent to the main university grounds of the University of Virginia. The University of Virginia is annually ranked as one of the premier public institutions in the United States.

Founded in 1819 as just the 10th medical school in the United States of America, the University of Virginia School of Medicine (UVA School of Medicine) with its 21 clinical departments, 8 research departments, and 6 research centers consistently attracts some of the nation’s most prominent researchers to develop breakthrough treatments that benefit patients around the world. These research efforts are backed by more than $230 million in grant funding.

Responsibilities Provide clinical care for the congenital cardiac population, including complex neonatal heart surgery, pediatric heart transplantation, and pediatric mechanical circulatory support. Participate in patient care, surgical cases, and clinical teaching. Engage in research and education as part of a busy, comprehensive congenital heart program.

Qualifications MD, certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS), with additional ABTS Certification in Congenital Cardiac Surgery. The ideal applicant will have a strong clinical background and interest in complex neonatal heart surgery, pediatric heart transplantation, and pediatric mechanical circulatory support.
