Hospitalist Program Details

Hospitalist positions are fully employed positions offering a 12 hour shift (15 shifts a month), 7 on 7 off schedule.

License Required: Possession of a license to practice medicine in the state of North Carolina and a valid Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certificate.

Residency Required: Successful completion of an accredited Family Medicine or Internal Medicine residency and board certification in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine, or achievement of board certification within the specified time established in CFVHS’s Medical Staff Bylaws.

Qualifications and Skills Requires skills and experience in the following:

Deep understanding of adult illnesses, chronic disease management, and acute inpatient care.

Ability to interpret lab results, imaging, and physical exams to form accurate diagnoses.

In‑depth knowledge of medications, interactions, dosages, and side effects.

Understanding of ICU‑level care.

Procedural Skills including Central line placement, Lumbar puncture, Paracentesis/thoracentesis, Intubation, Code Blue/ACLS response, and Joint aspiration.

Proficiency in Epic, Cerner, or other EMR systems.

Understanding of CPT/ICD‑10 coding for proper documentation and billing.

Applying clinical pathways, hospital protocols, and evidence‑based guidelines in patient care.

Staying up to date with guideline changes (e.g., sepsis, stroke, anticoagulation management)

Familiarity with quality metrics (e.g., readmission rates, length of stay, hospital‑acquired infections).

Basic understanding of data analysis to participate in quality improvement (QI) initiatives.

Job Duties The Staff Hospitalist position provides physician services for adult patients requiring inpatient admissions and provide inpatient consultations. Including the following clinical duties: Render appropriate adult patient evaluations and medical treatment, consistent with the current standards of care, and admit and manage patients; Provide medical care for patients, primarily on an inpatient level, but also as necessary on an outpatient basis to include observation units, medical consults on rehab patients, medical consults to patients located at Behavioral Health Center (BHC), or transitional care units; and Take an appropriate history and perform an appropriate physical examination on all patients prior to rendering treatment. Participates in the case management, level of care process, and the discharge planning process of each patient on service. She will provide appropriate supervision and review of services rendered by physicians and other non‑physicians involved in direct care of patients on service. Employs effective communications to patients and all members of the hospital team taking care of the patient. Coordinates care upon discharge of patient back to the primary care physician, including personal communication to the primary care physician about the patient’s hospital stay, present status, and any outstanding test results. Ensure that consultations by sub‑specialists to the Hospitalist service are done in a timely manner to optimize patient care. If a patient needs to be transferred to another facility for specialty care responsible for ensuring that: The risks and benefits of the transfer have been explained to the patient and patient’s family; That, in the professional medical opinion, the risks of the transfer are outweighed by the benefits of the transfer; The patient has been stabilized as much as possible; The receiving hospital has been contacted and has accepted the patient and has an available bed for the patient; and All appropriate medical center forms have been completed. Available to treat and respond in an emergency situation or otherwise, in a timely manner, when consulted by any healthcare professional, to include any suspected adult cardiac arrest. This includes, but is not limited to, SRRC, Radiology, Cardiac Rehab, and any general medical or surgical unit or intensive care unit. Participate in hospital committees, task forces, process development, etc.; provide leadership in the development and implementation of inpatient clinical pathways and best practices; participate in education of hospital staff, particularly nursing personnel; and attend Cape Fear Valley Hospitalist Group Meetings.
