The Controls Engineer provides day‑to‑day technical support for DCS and PLC systems, including motor controls, drives, instrumentation, HMI development, and system interfaces. This role supports both existing and new operations through control system configuration, monitoring, functional implementation, and startup of control strategies.
This position analyzes and resolves complex control system challenges through evaluation of operating conditions, system performance, and process data. The Controls Engineer supports and leads control‑focused capital projects and collaborates closely with cross‑functional teams to ensure successful execution.
The role works closely with IT teams to support network standardization, governance, cybersecurity, and system resilience, ensuring alignment with enterprise objectives related to availability, performance, and quality.
Responsibilities
Maintain and support DCS and PLC systems, ensuring reliability, compliance, backups, documentation, and change management.
Develop and implement automation improvements to enhance efficiency, quality, reliability, and cost performance.
Provide technical support for operations and maintenance teams.
Develop operator interfaces, alarm management, and process monitoring tools.
Collaborate with electrical, drive, and automation specialists.
Create and maintain control system documentation and SOPs.
Support capital projects, including system specification, testing, and startup.
Assist with troubleshooting, data analysis, and historian usage.
Support training and development of technical staff.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related technical discipline.
5+ years of experience in controls or automation engineering.
Strong experience with DCS platforms and PLC systems.
Experience with ABB 800xA; exposure to Honeywell Experion or Emerson DeltaV a plus.
Experience with Allen‑Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens, or GE PLCs.
Knowledge of industrial communication protocols (OPC, Modbus TCP, Ethernet/IP).
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
Ability to manage competing priorities and work independently and collaboratively.
