Job Summary The Marathon Los Angeles Refinery seeks a Rotating Equipment Reliability Engineer to maintain and improve operational availability, optimize equipment life‑cycle cost, and achieve best‑in‑class reliability. The role will support troubleshooting machinery issues, develop project requests, implement new solutions, and lead reliability programs.

Schedule 4 days – 10 hours per day, Monday‑Thursday, core hours 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM. After‑hours calls may occur once a month and support TAR/major maintenance events once a year.

Key Responsibilities

Serve as a technical resource to the Maintenance Machinery Foreman, Technicians, and Operations to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair rotating equipment.

Develop and provide training on rotating equipment and support systems for Maintenance and Operations personnel.

Lead site reliability programs and initiatives including Incident Investigations (using RCFA methods), Lost Opportunity Tracking, Pump Seal Reliability Program, PM Optimization, and Area Team Threats Neutralization Program to identify opportunities for improvement and drive solutions.

Lead multi‑department investigation teams to solve recurring rotating equipment failures.

Submit and approve equipment Preventative Maintenance (PM) plans to ensure compliance with Refinery Standard Practices and reliability initiatives.

Perform equipment condition assessments to determine fitness for service and develop equipment care and repair plans; review repair reports from outside shops and provide input on inspection requirements and approve repair plans ensuring compliance with Marathon specifications.

Identify critical equipment spare‑part requirements and ensure warehouse storage is aligned with the plan.

Identify and maintain a list of obsolete equipment and manage the replacement/upgrade plan.

Interface with MPC Rotating Equipment Advisory Group to share lessons learned and best practices; engage management to champion specification changes to improve equipment reliability and department efficiency.

Projects and TAR Support

Develop Project Request Forms (PRFs) for reliability improvements.

Develop, submit, and ensure MM/TAR scope is well justified, documented correctly, and meets maintenance specifications and industry best practices.

Define expectations and project deliverables related to Mechanical Integrity and reliability requirements, as well as site preferred technologies and methodologies.

Review project documentation, P&ID’s, and data sheets to ensure accuracy.

Provide technical support to Major Maintenance (MM) and Turnaround (TAR) execution team, assisting with equipment inspection, QA/QC, and FCO process.

Health, Safety, Environmental and Mechanical Integrity Stewardship

Participate in safety walks and field audits on a regular basis.

Serve as a technical resource to the Process Safety Department during Area Team HAZOP reviews.

Lead or support incident investigations to determine root cause and identify corrective actions.

Support MOC process and ensure that technical documentation is maintained per company policy.

Champion Mechanical Integrity program and the Major Equipment Deficiency process with key stakeholders.

Personal Development

Maintain a personal development plan and attend training to foster professional development to support career goals.

Minimum Qualifications Education, Experience and Skills

Must have Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (completed prior to start date).

Must have at least 2 years of post‑degree engineering experience in maintenance, machinery or engineering in a refinery, petro‑chemical or related heavy industry.

Must have experience interpreting and applying industrial and company standards.

Must have strong understanding of Management of Change requirements and process.

Able to understand mechanical systems and cross‑section drawings to troubleshoot field equipment.

Able to successfully communicate complex system information across various audiences, from hourly personnel to Refinery management.

Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.

Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and pass a hair drug test and physical examination.

Must have a valid driver’s license (MPC determines valid status).

Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.

Travel requirement is less than 5 %.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong working knowledge of all applicable industry standards for rotating equipment.

Experience in the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of rotating equipment such as pumps, turbines, centrifugal compressors, and reciprocating compressors.

Experience with machinery control systems such as anti‑surge protection systems, turbine governors and overspeed protection, and performance control software.

Experience with machinery condition monitoring tools such as Bently Nevada System 1, Emerson CSI, Prognost, and Windrock.

Experience in the installation of large machinery equipment, including foundation design, grouting, pipe strain, and alignment.

Working knowledge and application experience of RCM principles, RCFA and FMEA methodology and application.

Experience utilizing CMMS software; SAP experience is preferred.

Salary and Benefits Pay range: $104,300.00 – $179,800.00 Salary. The position belongs to a family of jobs with increasing responsibility, competency and skill level. Actual title and pay grade will be based on selected candidate’s experience and qualifications.
