Inpatient Coding Specialist (Coder III) – Fully Remote Job Title: Inpatient Coding Specialist (Coder III)

Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.

Location: 100% remote.

Job Overview This position reviews medical records to ensure accurate specificity of diagnoses and procedures for inpatient admissions. It effectively utilizes ICD‑10‑CM and PCS codes according to coding guidelines, communicates with providers and staff regarding missing information, manages deficiencies within Epic, and works with leadership to review denial reports and conduct audits to ensure documentation, code capture, and billing accuracy.

Job Description Key responsibilities include:

Verify and abstract clinical and demographic data from patient records.

Perform chart audits prior to coding to ensure required documentation is complete and signed; query providers or departments when deficiencies prevent coding.

Assign accurate ICD‑10‑CM/PCS codes derived from documentation.

Review reports with leadership to identify discrepancies.

Review audit lists, denial reports, and coding/billing changes.

Identify and evaluate coding issues, summarize findings, and make recommendations.

Collaborate with physicians to initiate corrections and resolve discrepancies.

Ensure all accounts are submitted accurately and timely.

Collaborate with Compliance, Educators, and Auditors.

Code and abstract within 72 hours of patient discharge and follow up on assigned discharges.

Serve as a resource for coding questions from interdepartmental staff.

Document special project work and provide recommendations.

Attend meetings and participate in projects to capture services through codes.

Maintain relationships with providers and office personnel for effective communication.

Promote excellent customer service and identify opportunities for process improvement.

Maintain collaborative team relationships and contribute to group goals.

Perform job junctions adhering to service principles with customer service focus.

Participate in coding audits and provide feedback to management.

Work closely with the DRG Validator to maintain high coding standards.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).

Three (3) years of ICD‑10‑CM and PCS coding experience.

EMR experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate’s degree.

5 years of inpatient ICD‑10‑CM and PCS coding experience within a teaching hospital or Level One Trauma Center.

Experience with Epic and CAC.

Physical Requirements

Sedentary role requiring primarily sitting, occasional standing and walking; mental demands intense at times.

Manual dexterity for computer keyboard use.

Ability to see computer screen and reports.

Skills & Abilities

Excellent organizational skills with multitasking and timely follow‑through.

Effective interpersonal and communication skills.

Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Communication via phone or virtually with colleagues and medical staff.

Knowledge of Excel and basic computer skills.

Working knowledge of ICD‑10‑CM/PCS, CPT, DRG, APG, payer policies, Coding Clinic, disease processes, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.

Proficient reading and writing in English.

Pay Range $24.65 – $30.82
