Network Analyst III - Data Center Systems Support Professional

The City of Lynchburg is seeking a skilled and dedicated Network Analyst to join our Network Services Team. The successful candidate for this role will play a lead role in maintaining the City of Lynchburg’s data center systems infrastructure. This role involves installing, overseeing, administering, monitoring, and optimizing data center hardware systems and associated operating systems and software to ensure high availability and efficient operations. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in IT hardware, server management, networking, and a keen attention to detail to support the organization’s mission‑critical systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties necessary to deliver services to customers and citizens may be assigned.
Key Responsibilities:
Infrastructure Management:
Install, configure, and maintain data center hardware and software, including servers, network equipment, storage systems, and virtualization platforms.
Perform routine hardware and software updates, upgrades, and patching to ensure systems remain operational and secure.
Configure and maintain SAN and NAS storage devices.
Configure and manage premise and cloud‑based directory services technology.
Administer and configure electronic messaging system platforms (e‑mail).
Monitoring and Optimization:
Monitor data center performance, including servers, storage, and network devices, using monitoring tools.
Identify and troubleshoot issues, ensuring quick response times and minimal downtime.
Implement performance optimization measures to maintain high efficiency and reliability.
Server Maintenance:
Manage GPO’s, DHCP, DNS for hybrid server environment (Physical and Virtual).
Perform monthly server and security patching for physical and virtual servers.
Manage and troubleshoot network connections, including LAN and WAN configurations.
Security, Disaster Recovery and Compliance:
Responsible for implementing and maintaining security processes to protect information systems assets.
Review and recommend security improvements, routinely ensuring systems are compliant with internal security requirements.
Configure, manage and maintain backup systems, routinely testing backup systems to ensure recoverability of information systems.
Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date documentation for data center configurations, layouts, maintenance schedules, and incidents.
Generate reports on data center performance, downtime, and incident resolution to provide insights for continuous improvement.
Incident Response and Support:
Respond to and resolve data center incidents, coordinating with internal teams and third‑party vendors as needed.
Provide technical support for infrastructure‑related issues, including on‑call support for critical incidents.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field.
5 – 7+ years of experience in data center engineering or IT infrastructure roles.
Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Technical Skills:
Skilled in the use and configuration of data center management and monitoring tools and technologies.
Technical expertise in configuring networking protocols and equipment, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs.
Expertise in the configuration and management of virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper‑V) and cloud systems and platforms.
Highly proficient in the configuration and management of directory services technologies (Active Directory, Azure).
Skilled in the management and administration of electronic mail and messaging systems (Office 365 and Exchange online).
Proficiency in the use of scripting technologies for systems management (Microsoft PowerShell).
Certifications (preferred):
Major industry certifications as related (Microsoft, VMware, etc.).
Soft Skills:
Exceptional customer service skills.
Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift and move heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs.).
Willingness to work on‑site.
On‑call for after‑hours emergencies, willingness to work nights and weekends, if necessary.
Possession of valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and acceptable driving record based on City criteria; Must successfully complete 15100 and 15700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment; May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
