Financial Controller
The Controller will oversee all accounting and financial operations for a construction company, ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and compliance with GAAP and industry‑specific regulations. This role requires deep experience in construction accounting, including job costing, percentage‑of‑completion, WIP reporting, and cash flow management across multiple projects.
Base pay range $135,000.00/yr - $165,000.00/yr
Key Responsibilities
Oversee the full‑cycle accounting function, including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, and month‑end close.
Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
Manage construction‑specific accounting processes, including:
Job costing and cost‑to‑complete analysis
Percentage‑of‑completion and revenue recognition
Work‑in‑Progress (WIP) schedules and variance analysis
Change orders, retainage, and contract billing
Monitor project profitability and provide financial insight to project managers and executive leadership.
Manage cash flow forecasting, banking relationships, and line of credit compliance.
Ensure compliance with bonding, insurance, lender, and tax requirements.
Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes.
Implement and maintain strong internal controls, policies, and procedures.
Coordinate and lead annual audits, reviews, and tax filings with external auditors and tax advisors.
Supervise and mentor accounting staff, ensuring timely and accurate deliverables.
Evaluate and improve accounting systems, processes, and reporting tools (ERP/project management systems).
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required).
CPA or CMA strongly preferred.
7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3–5 years in construction accounting.
Strong knowledge of construction accounting principles, including WIP, job costing, and revenue recognition.
Experience working with construction ERP systems (e.g., Sage, Viewpoint, Procore, Jonas, SAP, or similar).
Advanced Excel skills; ability to analyze large data sets and build financial models.
Strong leadership, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
Ability to work in a fast‑paced, project‑driven environment.
Preferred Experience
Experience supporting multiple concurrent projects or entities.
Experience working with bonding companies and lender reporting.
Familiarity with union payroll, prevailing wage, and multi‑state operations (a plus).
