Responsibilities

Supervise contractor installation and repair of GPS devices, related hardware and automotive, construction and highway maintenance equipment.

Assist with heavy‑equipment repair, diagnostics, telematics, and general maintenance.

Maintain records, establish training programs, implement departmental policies.

Prepare equipment and labor budgets, make estimates for equipment repairs, improvements and disposal.

Diagnose, repair, use and transport equipment; determine the best solutions.

Direct contractors and field shop personnel; lead when the Telematics – SSMI is absent.

Ensure workplace safety and foster positive relationships with external vendors to facilitate quality and timely service/repairs.

Collaborate with district personnel to prolong Caltrans GPS equipment in a safe and operable manner.

Work with other State agencies to promote the economical use of equipment.

Qualifications & Eligibility

Eligibility determined by score on the Caltrans Highway Mechanic Supervisor exam.

Current eligibility (transfer, permissive reinstatement or voluntary demotion) or new to state civil service; must be on the state examination list.

Valid driver’s license (Class C, unrestricted) and possession of a valid driver’s license when operating state vehicles.

Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) required – must be typed, single‑spaced, no more than two pages, 12‑point Arial font.

Working Conditions The role involves a climate‑controlled office setting with occasional field visits to uneven or slippery surfaces, bending, stooping, and kneeling. Occasional overnight travel throughout the State may be required. Employees are expected to report to the headquarters location if required.
