Legal Support Assistant I - Civil Compensation:

$48,609.60 annually. This appointment is eligible for step placement in accordance with County promotional rules and COMP ORD 1.3.5.

Future Salary Increases:

June 2026 – 4.2% increase to base pay (3.5% Across‑Board + 0.7% Market Adjustment)

June 2027 – 3.7% increase to base pay (3% Across‑Board + 0.7% Market Adjustment)

About the Position The Legal Support Assistant I – Civil is the entry‑level class within the Sheriff’s Office. Incumbents perform legal clerical work, process a wide variety of legal forms and documents, and enforce court orders in civil actions. The role provides customer‑service experience by assisting the public, attorneys, litigants, court personnel, and law‑enforcement officials with civil case inquiries and requests made in person, by phone, and via electronic and written mail.

In addition to general functions, incumbents handle cash and basic financial accounting: receiving, verifying, posting, and recording cash, checks, and other payment transmittals.

Hiring Timeline

Tentative job offer and background process begin shortly after interview.

Pre‑employment medical screening: approximately 3 days following successful background investigation.

Anticipated start date: based on successful completion of medical screening or mutually agreed date.

Education and Experience Qualifying education/experience:

One (1) year of full‑time general clerical or secretarial work experience.

Completion of a legal administrative assistant, legal secretarial, or paralegal program from a recognized community or business college.

Background Must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness. Felony convictions are disqualifying. Misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency. Candidates will be subject to a thorough background investigation, which may include a psychological exam, truth‑verification polygraph, or other examination or test.

Condition of Employment Prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre‑employment medical screening before beginning County employment. Additional background investigations may be conducted as required by job‑related activities.

Evaluation Qualified applicants will be placed on a six‑month employment list based on scores from the application and supplemental questionnaire. Candidates should ensure all information is complete and accurate. The supplemental questionnaire will be reviewed automatically; if successful in initial screening, the application will be reviewed individually to confirm accuracy and qualification.
