Job Description:

The Data Steward I provides data governance expertise and manages and/or executes data governance activities for a business or function. The role executes on business data strategy and deliverables in alignment with Data Policy, Standards and Strategy. The role also provides reporting, analysis, and assessments to support data governance within their business area or function. Appointed as a Data Steward for their business.

Subject matter expert level professional role requiring in-depth knowledge / expertise with respect to data governance and data asset risk management for a given business line and working knowledge of broader related areas

Analyzes current and emerging data related risks in day-to-day activities, operations, products and services within the Business, to ensure activities are within TD's Risk Appetite and policies

Governs and manages data under their stewardship, acting as a focal point for data governance within the Line of Business

Ensures their Line of Business (LOB) adheres to data related policies, standards and meets requirements set out by the Enterprise Data and Information Management Policy and Standards

Creates, designs, implements, and maintains LOB‑specific processes, templates, and appropriate mitigating controls, to support enterprise data policy and standards and ensure effective management and control of LOB data

Ensures data‑related activities are compliant with applicable laws and regulations

Provides 1st line oversight of LOB data management activities, including metadata and data quality management, data retention and disposition within BAU processes, projects, programs and change initiatives

Escalates data risks and issues and analyses and provides advice to business owners in developing and implementing action plans for data risk mitigation and issue resolution

Works in partnership with control partners (i.e., Technology Risk Management, Legal, Privacy, Office of the Chief Data Officer (OCDO), LOB First Line of Defense partners, etc.) to protect the Bank's data assets

Creates and delivers training programs and tools, and provides advice, to ensure the governance and oversight of data

Helps define the Line of Business data strategy

Promotes a strong data risk management culture

Acts as a subject matter expert within their own area of specialty or a resource for others

Leads projects of moderately to complex risks and resource requirements; may lead end‑to‑end processes or functional programs

Contributes to setting standards within area of expertise

Solves complex problems requiring analysis of multiple variables, including consultation with multiple stakeholders

Uses advanced methods to contribute to new solutions and recommend standards against which others will operate

Impacts a range of functional programs and operations across own and related teams

Analyzes guidelines, standards, policies and results of analysis to inform decision making at senior levels

Builds stakeholder alignment in leading projects and activities; may provide process and subject matter advice at senior levels

Works independently as the senior technical lead and guides others within area of expertise

Analyzes and leads problem resolution for complex issues at all levels

Participates in project meetings/working sessions to provide advice on data governance requirements

Independently completes data impact assessments and provides direct input to project teams in how to appropriately safeguard and manage data.

Performs data quality analysis and assessment for critical business data and reports breaches through risk escalation forums.

Analyzes key business processes for the appropriate level of data controls, and advises on additional/revised controls if applicable.

Analyzes and documents metadata to support adherence to internal requirements and external regulatory requirements

Manages data risk across lifecycle of data element (production, movement and consumption) i.e., pRCSA review and approval

Establishes and maintains thought leadership of data driven considerations within the LOB as well as other 1B functions

Influences business to continuously review for emerging risks and provides advice on possible regulatory implications of risks and issues.

Proficiency in working across stakeholder teams to reach consensus on various topics in support of sound data management practices.

Analyzes business processes that are causing data quality issues and determines root cause for issues and business processes to prevent future issues.

Determines appropriate rules to evaluate the data quality at a data element level.

Works directly with senior members of project teams to confirm data governance requirements are delivered. Makes calculated compromises in support of projects to meet delivery dates while also delivering optimal data governance.

Provides input in how data management policies are operationalized within the line of business.

Analyzes key business processes for robustness of data controls and advises on changes/enhancements.

Advises on issues/challenges that should be taken into account within future business objectives.

Performs in‑depth root cause analysis for data quality issues on behalf of management and stakeholder teams.

Education & Experience

Undergraduate degree or technical certificate

5+ years of relevant experience

Proficient knowledge of data governance/data management practices, enterprise data policy, standards & strategy

Proficient knowledge of M&A due diligence process, LOB data strategy, data risk management, and data life cycle management

Knowledge of current and emerging competitor and market trends

Skill in using analytical software tools, data analysis methods and reporting techniques

Skill in mentoring/coaching others

Skill in using computer applications including MS Office

Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form

Ability to work collaboratively and build relationships

Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently

Ability to exercise sound judgement in making decisions

Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work while meeting multiple deadlines

Ability to handle confidential information with discretion

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Data governance surrounding projects & data issues, governance control, and risk

Operational Risk experience

Familiarity with KPI's and metrics

Excellent attention to detail

Strong organizational and time management skills

Strong communication skills (written and verbal)

Customer Accountabilities

Provides guidance to the Business on identification of critical data and critical data elements

Provides guidance and oversight on the business' metadata management and data quality tasks

Provides guidance and oversight on the business' data retention and disposition tasks

Partners with technology and architecture stakeholders to drive effective data activities for business

Acts as a SME and/or research and analyze data issues, remediate and implement changes in various data councils and other forums on behalf of their business

Provides specialized data governance / management advice / support to management / leadership and respective teams for area(s) of specialization with industry, external and internal, enterprise and business awareness; understands trends, identifies issues and opportunities and provides recommended action to management

Leads on the implementation of initiatives in support of the overall data policies, standards, and strategy

Manages a set data governance work activity requiring coordination across multiple areas

Supports / manages the integrated implementation of policies / processes / procedures / changes in across multiple functional areas

Provides data governance expertise and/or input to projects/initiatives as a representative for area of specialization, and where necessary participate in identifying, designing and testing solutions and supporting implementation activities

Participates in Segment Data Council meetings

Supports the identification of business data owners and business data SMEs for the LOB

Facilitates socialization and training of the LOB data governance and data management community on data policies, procedures, tools, and templates

Supports the stewardship of data in accordance with the Enterprise Data Policy, Standards and Strategy

Adheres to enterprise frameworks or methodologies that relate to activities for respective business area(s)
