Structures Field Engineer
– HDR
At HDR, we provide PM/CM services for the Los Angeles World Airports ATMP Landside Improvements Project, delivering critical improvements to the roadways, streets, and thoroughfares in and around the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) campus. The project will support the infrastructure transformation ahead of the 2028 Olympics and serve millions of travelers for decades.
Key Responsibilities
Coordinate and support LAWA Construction Inspection Division and City of LA with daily field inspections to verify contractor operations related to structural components, including cast‑in‑place concrete, structural steel, falsework/temporary works, precast elements, post‑tensioning, and CIDH pile construction.
Prepare and maintain checklists for structures inspections, field material sampling and testing, and source inspections in accordance with project plans, specifications, and contract documents.
Assist in verifying that materials, methods, and workmanship conform to contract documents, Caltrans Standard Specifications, and the Caltrans Bridge Construction Records and Procedures (BCRP) manual.
Maintain detailed field records including daily reports, quantity calculations, inspection logs, photographic documentation, as‑built documentation, and punch‑lists.
Assist with the review and processing of submittals, RFIs, field directives, requests for task orders, change notices, and change orders.
Monitor contractor progress, participate in schedule reviews, and coordinate look‑ahead activities.
Monitor temporary structure operations for conformance with approved falsework plans, erection plans, and working drawings.
Coordinate material sampling and testing with LAWA Labs, LA BCA, Caltrans METS, or other QA entities.
Communicate with the Structures Representative, contractor personnel, and agency stakeholders to resolve field issues.
Assist with punch‑lists, close‑out documentation, and final reports for structural work.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
5+ years of experience on public works or transportation projects, with exposure to structural work.
Working knowledge of Caltrans Bridge Construction procedures, Standard Specifications, and relevant manuals (e.g., Falsework Manual).
Proficient in Microsoft Office and Bluebeam; familiarity with structure‑specific forms and templates is a plus.
Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate field records.
Valid California driver’s license and ability to work on active construction sites.
Experience with cast‑in‑place post‑tensioned box girder bridge construction, falsework, temporary shorings, mass soil mixing, and retaining walls.
EIT certification or on‑track for PE license.
Caltrans Structure Rep training or familiarity with METS processes.
OSHA 10 or 30 certification.
Experience with alternate delivery methods such as progressive design‑build, design‑build, and/or CMGC.
Familiarity with LAWA Design and Construction Handbook and project delivery procedures.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Technology, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Minimum of 5 years progressive construction experience on multidisciplinary projects.
Fundamental understanding of contracts and familiarity with codes and laws governing construction.
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications, and identify discrepancies or conflicts within documents.
Team‑orientation and strong verbal and written communication skills.
Computer literacy, with experience in Microsoft Office, Primavera, or related construction packages.
