Cardiac Sonographer I – All About Ultrasound Cardiac Sonographer I performs transthoracic, transesophageal (TEE), and stress echocardiograms, preparing patient records for physician review in accordance with Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) accreditation and national standards.

Typical Duties

Provides interpreting physician with complete and accurate documentation of cardiac anatomy and performance for adult patients.

Performs routine, complex, and emergency echocardiograms (2D, 3D transthoracic, stress, and TEE) as requested by physician and in accordance with standard practices.

Conducts routine and complex cardiovascular diagnostic studies such as stress testing, tilt table, and Holter monitoring.

Performs routine and emergency electrocardiograms (ECG).

Acquires measurements and performs Doppler tracings to aid physician in interpretation of images.

Produces work efficiently to meet divisional productivity standards.

Administers IV contrast and agitated saline as needed; inserts and removes IV lines.

Analyzes patient medical records to obtain history and necessary information for procedures.

Prepares patient records for physician review, including selection, recording, and cross‑referencing of significant studies.

Maintains confidentiality of patients and employees.

Participates in quality improvement activities, evaluating procedure results for technical quality and accuracy.

Maintains IAC accreditation standards in the echocardiography laboratory.

Maintains equipment, performs minor adjustments, routine cleaning, and preventative maintenance; reports malfunction to supervisor.

Maintains all necessary supplies, including ordering and stocking.

Acts as member of cardiac arrest team; assists in emergency procedures per hospital policies.

Works overtime, extended hours, nights, weekends, holidays as required.

Demonstrates compliance with institutional, regulatory, and legal requirements.

Carries pager during business hours; takes call for STAT or emergency studies after hours per rotation basis.

Covers diagnostic cardiac testing at other CCHHS sites when necessary.

Performs other related duties within diagnostic cardiac testing as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Graduate of an accredited echocardiography/cardiac ultrasound program OR two (2) years of experience as a full‑time Cardiac Sonographer.

Must possess one of the following credentials: Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) in Adult Echocardiography (AE) from ARDMS.

Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) from Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).

Advanced Cardiac Sonographer (ACS) from CCI.

Must be able to travel to work sites throughout CCHHS as needed.

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of intra‑procedural echocardiograms, 3D TTE and TEE acquisition, strain, stress (exercise and dobutamine) echocardiograms, transesophageal echocardiograms, tilt table, Holter monitoring, and stress testing.

Ability to make patient care decisions within training and experience limits and hospital policies.

Demonstrates sensitivity and respect in caring for patients and interacting with diverse backgrounds.

Effective communication skills.

Strong attention to detail and ability to prepare accurate written and verbal reports.

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and professional literature.
