Job Description
CALTRANS EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I (Job Code: JC-502052). Salary range: $4,571.00 - $5,710.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or the minimum of the alternate range when applicable. Final Filing Date: 12/27/2025.
Responsibilities
Operate Category 2 equipment assigned to the unit, including auger trucks, fork-lifts, backhoes, crane trucks, cone trucks, shadow trucks, trailers, and various trailers.
Work individually or with a crew performing tasks related to highway maintenance such as paving, shoulder grading, mowing, ditch cleaning, dig outs, pavement patching, sign, marker, fence, guardrail, and culvert maintenance, traffic control, lane closures, litter removal, and disposal of animal carcasses.
Perform equipment care and record‑keeping: clean, make minor repairs, service equipment, keep records of time reporting, equipment pre‑op/post‑op, material use, and other pertinent records.
Operate Class A equipment during emergencies or unexpected workload increases when properly licensed and equipment qualified.
Travel out of town on a per diem for training, meetings, and other job‑related duties. May be required to work overtime, irregular shifts, nights, or weekends as directed by supervision or emergencies.
Qualifications
Either:
One year of experience in California state service performing duties of a Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker or Caltrans Landscape Maintenance Worker,
or two of the following:
Two years of experience performing the duties of a Service Assistant (Maintenance) in the California Department of Transportation,
One year of experience (within the last five years) operating highway construction or maintenance equipment or light trucks requiring a Class B commercial driver license,
Possession of certification as a Heavy Equipment Operator Technician from an accredited college or university,
Valid California Class B commercial driver license with a Tank (N) endorsement. A hazardous material endorsement is desirable. Class A endorsement desirable for operating Class A equipment.
Must possess a valid, unrestricted California Driver’s License (CDL) and complete the required drug screening.
Working Conditions & Personal Safety Requirements
Work outdoors in extreme weather conditions, including heat up to 120° F and cold down to 20° F. Possible exposure to strong winds, rain, sleet, and snow.
Personal safety requirements:
Work boots in good condition.
Long or short sleeve shirts from Caltrans or safety vest over no‑safety shirt or coat.
Long pants; no cut‑offs or short pants.
Provided safety gear: hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, face shield, gloves, respirator, chaps or other required gear.
