Job Summary The Infection Control Practitioner plans, organizes, develops, and implements Wesley Healthcare’s infection prevention and control program in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local standards. The program includes surveillance, education, consultation, mandated reporting, and regulatory preparedness. The role assumes shared responsibility for managing surveillance, prevention, and control of infections hospital-wide and collaborates with other departments to ensure staff education on optimal infection prevention and control practices. Strong computer skills are required.

Responsibilities

Adapt technique and treatment to age of population served while respecting cultural differences and spiritual needs.

Implement a surveillance system, develop methodologies, define infections using written criteria, analyze data, develop data forms, and determine incidence of healthcare-associated infections.

Communicate with local and state health departments regarding surveillance, outbreaks, epidemiology, and preparedness activities.

Identify and isolate patients with communicable diseases, healthcare-associated infections, and resistant organisms. Identify clusters of infections and recommend isolation precautions.

Analyze antimicrobial sensitivity patterns, interpret epidemiologic markers and laboratory findings during outbreak investigations.

Monitor and evaluate the quality of infection control and epidemiology to establish best practices.

Collaborate with all departments to design and implement strategies to prevent healthcare-associated infections and manage multidrug‑resistant organisms.

Implement infection control prevention practices and evaluate techniques at all health‑care levels.

Serve as community liaison and hospital spokesperson to communicate public information.

Investigate exposures to communicable disease, initiate appropriate measures, complete investigations promptly, create a line list of involved patients, and communicate information to appropriate personnel.

Provide consulting services to facility departments, assess issues for investigation, develop action plans, devise implementation strategies, and evaluate outcomes.

Review, revise, and update facility and departmental policies and procedures to maintain compliance with standards, regulations, and guidelines. Present new policies to committees.

Conduct literature reviews to support practice and best‑practice implementation.

Utilize quality‑improvement tools, evaluate products and equipment, and take action to improve infection‑control practices.

Collaborate with the IC team at Division level, review processes, share best practices, assist in reviewing core‑measure compliance, and oversee affiliated infection‑control practices.

Represent the facility in professional organizations such as APIC and work with regulatory compliance managers to ensure alignment with TJC, CMS, CDC, and KDHE requirements.

Participate in orientation and annual education programs; develop programs to increase staff knowledge and skills, create audiovisual and written materials, and perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Education or Experience

Bachelor’s degree in nursing or medical technology, or related field.

Preferred Registration, Licensure and/or Certification

Current Certification in Infection Prevention and Control.

Current registration or license with experience in Kansas as a Registered Professional Nurse, medical technologist, or clinical laboratory scientist.

Preferred Education or Experience

Master’s degree in public health.

Minimum of 1‑3 years of infection prevention and control experience.

Knowledge of hospital epidemiology principles, infectious diseases, sterilization, sanitation, and disinfection practice.

Required Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of principles, practices, procedures, and patient‑safety principles in infection control and prevention in the patient‑care environment.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

Ability to teach subject matter to others or train through explanation, demonstration, and supervised practice.

Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple priorities.

Strong communication skills with diverse personnel, patients, and physicians.

Team‑building, conflict‑resolution, and communication skills, both verbal and written.

Ability to develop educational and research policies, quality‑improvement programs, and operational policies.

Collaborative work with other departments and physicians.

Professional judgment in identifying improvement areas and participating in quality initiatives.

Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
