Compensation:

New hires start between $109,108 and $145,478 based on experience, qualifications, skills, competencies, internal equity, and market factors. While the full pay range is listed for this position for pay transparency, individual compensation is determined by various factors and may vary within the posted range.

WHAT YOU’LL DO The Senior Systems Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, managing, and maintaining the technology and communication systems that support the PHS computer and Hybrid network infrastructure. This role ensures the stability, security, and scalability of all IT infrastructure, including both cloud and on‑premises systems, to align with PHS’s strategic direction and mission. The Senior Systems Engineer also provides leadership on technology initiatives, collaborates with stakeholders to identify and address business needs, and ensures the delivery of high‑quality IT services to all PHS units.

PRIMARY/ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversee the design, configuration, and maintenance of servers, networks, and storage systems. Maintain security and operating system versions, revisions, and updates

Ensure optimal performance, security, and availability of Pioneer IT infrastructure and email systems, including hybrid cloud environments

Manage on‑premises and hosted systems, hybrid configurations, and emerging technology deployments

Support cloud virtualization platforms in Azure Landing Zone and other cloud resources to meet organizational needs

Manage on‑premises virtualization platforms such as VMware and vSphere to support on‑premises IT operations

Lead infrastructure projects from concept to completion, including requirement gathering, planning, and execution

Develop and implement strategies for system upgrades, migrations, and scaling to accommodate growth

Deploy and manage modern cloud solutions such as Azure Sentinel, Intune, Entra ID, and M365 to enhance operational efficiency and security. Leverage systems for threat detection and response, ensuring robust cybersecurity measures are in place

Coach support staff and maintain runbooks and knowledge articles to improve faster first‑line resolution improvement in IT processes and practices

Conduct audits to ensure IT systems, networks, and processes comply with organizational policies and standards

Implement and manage Azure Landing Zones to establish a secure and scalable cloud foundation

Monitor and maintain cloud infrastructure to ensure compliance with best practices and security standards

Conduct regular performance monitoring, system health checks, and preventive maintenance tasks

Troubleshoot and resolve complex hardware, software, and network issues in a timely manner

Maintain up‑to‑date documentation for system configurations, processes, and procedures

Work closely with management to maintain alignment for IT infrastructure initiatives and support organizational goals

Serve as a point of escalation for critical issues and provide expert‑level support when needed

Observe and implement IT Change Management protocols and principles for all system administration functions that impact technologies and end users

Maintain and manage critical services in both on‑premises and hybrid environments, ensuring connectivity and security

Oversee backup and disaster recovery solutions for servers and critical data using industry‑standard tools and methodologies

Ensure the reliability and uptime of critical services, implementing proactive measures to minimize downtime

Support the network team with software‑defined Wide network and other advanced networking solutions for enhanced performance across remote sites and main hubs

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED Bachelor’s degree in information technology or related field, and/or 5+ years equivalent work experience as a Senior Systems Engineer 8+ years of experience in systems engineering, IT infrastructure management, or a similar role

6+ years’ experience with Microsoft Server OS and system administration

Advanced administration skills using Microsoft Server and Microsoft Exchange, including Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, VPN, and Remote Desktop/Terminal Services

Hands‑on experience with Microsoft Azure, including Azure VMs, virtual networking, storage, and integration with on‑premises environments (hybrid)

Experience managing and maintaining Microsoft 365 ecosystem services (Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint Online, OneDrive) in hybrid or cloud‑only deployments

Strong experience with Entra ID (Azure AD), including identity management, Conditional Access, SSO, and MFA

Experience deploying and administering Microsoft Intune for endpoint/device management and policy enforcement

Expertise in managing Windows and Linux server environments

Experience supporting Microsoft SQL Server systems and environments

Proficiency in virtualization technologies such as VMware, vSphere, Hyper‑V, and Azure VM‑based workloads

Strong understanding of networking concepts, including LAN/WAN, VLANs, firewalls, VPNs, and SD‑WAN

Experience managing and maintaining on‑premises critical services such as Exchange (on‑premises and hybrid) and backup systems

Experience with IT security practices, tools, and frameworks such as:

Microsoft Defender (EDR/XDR, Defender for Endpoint/Office/Cloud Apps)

Azure Sentinel (Microsoft Sentinel) for SIEM/SOAR

Cisco Umbrella or equivalent secure DNS/web gateway solutions

Experience with infrastructure and application monitoring using tools such as SolarWinds and native Azure monitoring (Log Analytics, Azure Monitor)

Strong skills in creating detailed documentation and delivering concise reports to both technical and non‑technical audiences

Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues across network, server, and cloud layers

Excellent verbal, written and teamwork communication skills

PREFERRED/DESIRABLE

Microsoft Always On experience

Relevant certifications such as CCNA, Network +, MCSE, VCP, Azure Administrator/Architect, or AWS Certified Solutions Architect are highly desirable

Experience with Microsoft Data Protection Manager

Deep understanding of project management and continuous improvement processes

Experience with Legal and regulatory requirements including HIPAA and CMMC for IT compliance
