Assistant Director, Faculty/Staff Communications
General Description: The Assistant Director, Faculty/Staff Communications, develops, leads and manages internal communications for NOVA to inform faculty and staff about the college’s priorities, accomplishments and key organizational developments. The assistant director will collaborate and work cross-departmentally to ensure internal communications alignment across the college such that the appropriate messages are pushed to the appropriate audiences at the appropriate times via the appropriate channels.
This position is eligible for telework after completion of state one‑year probationary period.
Duties and Tasks
Develops, leads and manages a multi‑year internal communications strategy.
Serves as the executive producer of NOVA’s internal podcast.
Champions NOVA’s strategic plan to faculty and staff by developing, leading and managing a communications strategy specific to the college’s strategic plan.
Creates clear, engaging and accurate content for various platforms, often on tight deadlines.
Collaborates and works cross‑departmentally to ensure internal communications alignment across the college such that the appropriate messages are pushed to the appropriate audiences at the appropriate times via the appropriate channels.
KSAs Knowledge of internal communication strategies. Knowledge of employee branding. Knowledge of how to align communication efforts with departmental and institutional goals. Ability to lead and execute strategies and projects with minimal supervision. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple communications projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks effectively and coordinate complex tasks from start to finish. Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues, stakeholders and senior leadership. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, SharePoint, PowerPoint, Excel) and online communication tools (e.g., WordPress, X/Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram). The ability to quickly learn new technologies, content management systems and email marketing platforms (such as Axios HQ, Canva, Team Dynamix, etc.) is also required. Strong judgment and creative thinking skills to align communication efforts with the broader goals of the institution and department. Familiarity with a wide range of communication channels (e.g., email newsletters, podcasts, intranets, town halls) and an understanding of how to communicate effectively with diverse internal audiences. Proficient in conventional and digital photography and videography.
Minimum Work Experience Experience leading and managing internal communications strategies using various platforms to support institutional goals. Experience overseeing the full lifecycle of podcast production, from topic selection and guest coordination to promotion. Experience writing, editing and proofreading high‑quality content for a variety of internal channels, including emails, newsletter articles, intranet, podcast questions and summaries, etc. Experience conducting communication audits, including analyzing and using feedback to evaluate the impact of communications initiatives. Collaboration with senior leadership and other departments to champion institutional initiatives and strategic plans.
Additional Considerations Experience in higher education communications, especially community colleges. Experience working in a multi‑site organization. Experience working in a matrixed organization.
