The Assistant Photo Editor reports to the Photo Director and manages a high volume of photo shoots, research, and departmental tasks across all Southern Living content pillars—including travel, home, garden, food, and entertaining. This role oversees photography for 6–10 stories per issue from start to finish.
Responsibilities:
Collaborate with story editors to confirm story needs and work with the Photo Director and Art Director to establish the visual direction.
Provide detailed shot lists, communicate shoot details to photographers and stylists, and ensure necessary paperwork, releases, and credit information are obtained.
Offer remote or on‑set photo direction under the guidance of the Photo Director.
Research and source high‑quality imagery from photographers for stories that require stock or pickup photography.
Negotiate budgets, coordinate contracts with the Office Manager, organize final images within server/database structures, verify metadata accuracy, review final layouts, order high‑resolution assets as needed, and enter photo credits during production.
Hybrid Schedule
– In office 3 days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) in Birmingham, AL. Remote work up to 2 days per week.
Team
– Southern Living is the voice of the modern south, celebrating southern lifestyle and culture.
Travel Requirement
– 0–2 weeks per year.
Education BA required in Art, Photography, or a related field.
Experience 1–2 years in a similar position or a position with directly transferable skills.
Skills & Abilities
Excellent visual sense and knowledge of photography and narrative.
Broad general knowledge of interior design, southern travel, and culture.
Strong organizational skills.
Clear, descriptive writing and strong verbal communication.
Capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
