UTILITY SYSTEM WORKER I - USW I - WATER DISTRIBUTION Role

Brief Description The purpose of this position is to maintain the distribution of water and the collection of wastewaters. Responsibilities include preparing job sites, installing, cleaning, and repairing water and sewer lines; maintaining water and sewer lines; replacing pipes; cleaning and changing meters and equipment; keeping the shop clean. Other duties include assisting operators and completing related assigned tasks.

Licensing Requirements Driver’s License: Commercial class A with tanker endorsement required. Individuals without a current license must obtain the license within 60 days of enrollment, providing a commercial learner’s permit and subsequently a valid commercial driver’s license.

Other Requirements

Mission Essential Position: required to report during all inclement weather.

Must regularly work in or around bodies of water greater than 4 feet deep. The position may pose hazards, especially in absence of swimming ability.

Essential Functions

1. Attendance

– Regular and reliable attendance in compliance with schedules.

2. Meter Maintenance

– Maintains meters and fire hydrants by cleaning, repairing, and replacing as needed.

3. Repairs & Maintenance

– Serves as the primary caretaker for meter boxes, water and sewer lines, and equipment. Tasks include excavating, cutting off valves, cleaning out lines, removing and replacing manhole lids, contacting customers, placing clamps, and restoring flow.

4. Assistant Services

– Assists equipment operators and crews with parts and equipment delivery, spotting lines, and ensuring tools are available.

5. Shop Cleaning

– Cleans the shop by sweeping, emptying trash, reorganizing parts, and reporting restocking needs.

Minimum Job Requirements

High School graduation or GED.

Over three months up to and including six months experience related to utility or maintenance work.

English proficiency: reads instructions, composes routine reports.

Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and calculations of ratios, rates, and percentages.

Work requires moderate physical demand: lifting 20–50 lbs regularly, and up to 100 lbs occasionally.

Physical Demands & Hazards

Medium to heavy work involving walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing, raising objects.

Exposure to hazardous chemicals, water, and risk of drowning if swimming ability is absent.
