Base pay range $24.00/hr - $24.00/hr
Description Under the direction of the Regional Park Maintenance Supervisor, SG-16 or designee, the incumbent will be assigned to the Regional Maintenance Garage. The incumbent will be required to perform a wide range of vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance tasks. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Performs tasks in the repair, maintenance, and servicing of automotive and mechanical equipment such as service and adjustment of brakes, replacement of wheel bearings, and the removal and replacement of such components as starters, fuel pumps, water pumps, gas tanks, exhaust system components, shock absorbers, springs, and radiators.
Performs engine repairs as well as tune‑ups according to manufacturer’s specifications.
Performs preventive maintenance inspections of vehicles and equipment following preventive maintenance schedules to insure safe and trouble‑free performance.
Executes minor and major mechanical repairs by performing such tasks as disassembling and assembling engine components or mechanical equipment, cleaning parts and inspecting them for wear, and performing activities such as grinding valves and valve seats according to specifications and specific instructions.
Operates departmental equipment including light duty trucks, commercial vehicles, and heavy equipment.
May perform welding using electric or oxy‑acetylene welding equipment not requiring complex planning and layout or the use of special procedures.
Performs heavy lifting and materials handling.
Performs routine preventative maintenance on all assigned hand and power tools.
Maintains daily activity reports, along with other required written records.
Adheres to the agency’s Code of Conduct Policy and ensure compliance with all guidelines, policies, and procedures in the performance of daily tasks.
Qualifications Four years of full‑time experience in motor equipment under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part‑time and volunteer experience.
Operational Needs & Additional Comments
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with airbrake and tanker endorsements that allows the candidate to legally operate commercial vehicles in New York State or obtain one and maintain it as a term and condition of employment.
Must obtain certification by the Department of Motor Vehicles to conduct NYS vehicle inspections on #1 Light vehicles and #2 Heavy Vehicles and maintain it as a term and condition of employment.
Must have working knowledge of practices and techniques of making a variety of mechanical and electrical repairs on gas and diesel powered automotive and other motor‑driven equipment.
Must have working knowledge of the operation of automotive and other motor‑driven equipment.
Must have the ability to make accurate diagnoses of mechanical or electrical problems of gas and/or diesel powered self‑propelled and non‑propelled automotive equipment.
Must have the ability to use tools, equipment, and materials of the mechanical trade.
Must have the ability to read and interpret technical maintenance manuals, circuit diagrams and blueprints.
Must be able to supervise others and to act independently with a minimum of supervision.
Must have knowledge of standard safety practices.
Must be physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor.
Under the provisions of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (1991), this position has been designated Safety Sensitive. The candidate is required to participate in pre‑employment, random and post‑accident drug and alcohol testing.
