Summary This position is located in Dry Tortugas National Park, within the Maintenance Division. It is a required occupancy position; the incumbent is required to reside in government housing. The appointment is a Career/Conditional Full-time position.

Area Information The station is within Dry Tortugas National Park (DRTO) on Garden Key, 68 miles west of Key West, Florida. Garden Key is a remote 16-acre island with limited services. Employees must travel to Key West via ship, ferry, or seaplane to access most services.

Duties

Serves as the senior Utility Systems Repairer Operator at Dry Tortugas National Park, responsible for the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of the park’s critical water and wastewater treatment systems.

Position requires work at the journeyman level, serving as the operator in charge over a wastewater treatment facility and its plant processes, and water treatment facilities (reverse osmosis desalinators) and their processes.

Operates and maintains desalination plants, water storage/distribution systems, and wastewater treatment facilities, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and NPS standards.

Conducts daily testing, calibration, and adjustments of chemical feed systems, pumps, filters, and monitoring equipment.

Troubleshoots and repairs utility system components including piping, pumps, motors, float switches, valves, electrical controls, HVAC, and other associated infrastructure.

Maintains preventive maintenance schedules and performs corrective maintenance on mechanical and electrical systems supporting water and wastewater operations, including emergency backup power systems.

Keeps accurate logs, records, and compliance reports for regulatory agencies.

Occasionally performs duties in a variety of other trades, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, air conditioning, and general facility support.

Assists in emergency response operations, including tropical storm recovery and other incidents that impact water, wastewater, or other essential utilities.

Provides training, guidance, and oversight to lower graded staff working on utility systems.

Performs administrative functions such as ordering supplies and preparing work orders in the Facility Management Software System (FMSS).

Qualifications

U.S. citizenship required.

Background investigation and favorable adjudication required.

Must register with the Selective Service (males).

Must obtain and maintain a Florida Class C Wastewater Treatment Operators Certificate.

Valid driver’s license required; must maintain a government charge card with travel authority.

Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and operate small watercraft less than 26 ft.

Must pass the Department of the Interior Motorboat Operator Certification Course within 3 months of duty assignment and maintain certification.

Must obtain a Florida Class C Wastewater Treatment Certificate within 30 days of entrance if not already possessed.

Physical Demands Typical duties require moderate to heavy physical effort to lift, carry, or handle items up to 50 lbs. Work may involve standing, walking, bending, crouching, reaching, stooping, and use of hoists and pulleys. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under prevailing weather conditions.

Working Conditions Work is indoors and outdoors for extended periods, with exposure to biological hazards, hazardous gases, electrical shock, and noise. Safety equipment such as face shields, gloves, hard hats, and respirators is used. Motor vehicles and heavy engineering equipment may be operated. Telework may be allowed with supervisor approval.
