What you will do at Harris County Precinct 2 Under general supervision, performing lead level, highly skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic control signs. Responsible for installing, removing, replacing, relocating, and repairing all traffic control signs in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Roadway and Traffic Design standards, and Precinct 2 policies and standards. Work involves operation of a variety of complex equipment used in roadway pavement markings, and the fabrication of roadway signs, and overall general sign maintenance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Installs, inspects, removes, replaces, relocates, and repairs all traffic control signs and pavement markings in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Roadway and Traffic Design standards, and departmental policies and standards.

Reviews signs and pavement marking conditions, including fading, damage, height, distance, rigidity, obstacles, safety issues, and nighttime reflectivity inspections, in accordance with current state and federal standards and practices; corrects deficiencies.

Prepares, completes, and maintains assigned tasks and work logs; ensures documentation includes location of signs, sign types, vertical and horizontal measurements of signs, times, dates, retro reflectivity readings of signs, sign inspections, and pavement markings, and work completed.

Participates in inventory of signs and markings, and assists with traffic data collection on county roads. Assists in maintaining, loading and off‑loading supply of all signs, markings, equipment and materials needed. Maintains sign and material inventories on assigned vehicle.

Performs pre‑trip vehicle, and equipment inspections and safety checks prior to use; and cleans vehicle and equipment after use and as needed. Utilizes a variety of tools and equipment common to road striping and sign maintenance.

Performs construction duties including setting up road signs, barricades, flagging and directing traffic, and utilizing hand tools.

Perform any other duties or responsibilities that may be assigned.

Licensure

Valid Texas Driver's License

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Must be proficient in multi‑tasking to meet deadlines provided.

Ability to document activities both written and electronic, utilize work order management system, and asset management system.

Ability to work in a professional manner with all levels of management, staff, and public.

Knowledgeable of principles, methods, practices, materials, equipment and tools used in road maintenance operations.

Knowledgeable of Harris County specifications and drawings.

Education

High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent (preferred)

Experience

Three (3) years of road maintenance experience (preferred)

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Work is on active construction sites involving pervasive hazards associated with heavy equipment and tool operations; speeding traffic; loud and constant noise; and regular exposure to chemicals, dust, fumes, and combustible materials. Required to work outdoors on varied and often unstable terrain involving exposure to varying weather conditions of extreme hot and cold temperatures. Some working conditions require special precautions and the use of protective gear (e.g., hard hats, respirator masks, gloves, etc.).

Essential functions involve significant physical demands related to repeated lifting of up to 50 pounds unassisted, 100 pounds with assistance rarely; carrying tools, materials, and equipment over rough terrain; climbing, reaching and bending. Frequently required to walk, sit, talk, drive, hear, bend, stoop, twist, and balance; need the ability to occasionally kneel and crawl; need the ability to grasp manual controls and the ability to use foot controls and operate gas, diesel, and electrically powered equipment.
