Week of 02/02 and/or 02/09/26: Interviews will be scheduled for top candidates. The process includes an interview and may include a written and/or performance exercise.
Basic Function Under supervision, the Parks Maintenance Worker performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the development and maintenance of City Parks and Recreational facilities and related work as required. Incumbents are trained in and perform a broad range of duties in basic grounds keeping, landscaping, construction, restoration, and maintenance trades as necessary. Incumbents generally work as a member of a crew, may be given independent assignments, and may lead a small crew of temporary aides and volunteers. Incumbents may be called back for after hour emergencies.
Distinguishing Characteristics This classification is entry level. Incumbents of the next higher classification, Senior Parks Maintenance Worker, are assigned tasks that require advanced skill or specialized knowledge and may be assigned to lead a small crew without supervision.
Typical Duties
Prepare soil for planting; plant various trees, shrubs, and flowers.
Weed flower beds and other planting areas.
Mow, rake and edge lawns and turf.
Water plants by hand and with irrigation systems.
Rake, gather, load and haul refuse and cut vegetation.
Clean and stock restrooms.
Assist in applying fertilizers.
Assist with the installation, repair and maintenance of irrigation systems.
Trim and prune trees, shrubs and ground coverings.
Load, unload and operate pick‑up and light dump trucks.
Participate in digging, widening and backfilling trenches and other excavations.
Use general groundskeeping, carpentry and mechanical tools.
Operate landscape construction, turf maintenance, and weed removal equipment.
Identify and remove invasive plant species and weeds from sensitive habitats.
Apply erosion control measures.
Maintain paths and trails; remove debris and obstructions; level uneven surfaces; identify and repair potential trip hazards.
Perform minor electrical repairs on park lights, switches and irrigation clocks.
Assist with the installation, maintenance and repair of picnic tables and other park items.
Inspect parks for hazards and unsafe conditions; remove or repair them.
Pick up and remove trash and debris; replace trash can liners.
Perform basic repairs in park restrooms, buildings, and facilities.
Perform rough carpentry and cement work in fences and other structures.
Paint fences, curbs, building interiors and exteriors, floors, and other infrastructure.
Perform light graffiti cleanup.
Perform routine maintenance and repair of tools and equipment.
Maintain inventory of maintenance supplies; prepare material requests and keep work logs.
Place traffic control flags, signs and cones around work sites.
Respond to public inquiries tactfully.
Construct and install park signs.
Perform other related duties reasonably expected of this classification.
If Assigned to Wharf or Beach Parks
May operate a power boat, barge, or personal watercraft.
Operate beach grooming equipment and street sweeper.
Work in and around large crowds of people.
If Assigned to Swimming Pool Facility
Cleans pool by brushing sides and bottom, scrubbing tile, skimming with net, and vacuuming.
Tests and regulates chemical balance of water; adds chemicals; changes filters and tanks as needed.
Maintains equipment to ensure a clean environment.
Cleans and sterilizes restrooms, dressing rooms, showers, and pool decks.
Checks and services pool equipment.
Maintains records of pool testing results and maintenance.
Paints pool decks, equipment, and interior walls.
If Assigned to Open Spaces
Assist with vegetation management in support of wildfire prevention and land management objectives.
Assist with ecological restoration work including grading, construction of engineered features, planting, seeding, weeding, and maintenance of undergoing restoration areas.
If Assigned to Golf Course
Mow, edge, and trim turf on fairways, greens, and trees.
Rake sand bunkers; pick up debris; keep path and playing areas clean.
Assist with basic irrigation tasks.
Working Conditions Position requires sitting, standing, balancing or walking on uneven and slippery surfaces; reaching, twisting, turning, climbing, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping; making repetitive hand movements. Requires near and far vision, ability to speak and hear. Must lift, carry, walk, hike, push and pull tools weighing up to 60 pounds. Works outdoors in all weather conditions. May use chemicals and/or hazardous chemicals. Some requirements may be accommodated for qualified individuals seeking accommodations.
Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience
High school diploma or tested equivalent.
One (1) year of manual labor experience including groundskeeping or construction.
Knowledge

Follow oral and written instructions in English.
Complete simple records in English.
Safely perform manual labor.
