Job Description Position Title: Heavy Equipment Operator
Department: Maintenance
Agency: Oklahoma Department of Transportation, District 5 – Clinton
County Locations: Beckham, Custer, Jackson, Tillman, Kiowa, Greer, Washita, Roger Mills, Blaine, Dewey, Harmon, Caddo
Responsibilities
Operate heavy equipment such as trucks, tractors, road graders, dozers, loaders, cranes, backhoes, paint machines, semi‑trailers, snow‑removal equipment.
Perform minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities.
Repair failures in roadway shoulders, bridge decks, signs, posts, guardrails, fences.
Provide traffic‑control assistance using stop/slow signs or flags.
Apply herbicide to highway right‑of‑ways.
Remove debris including tires, animal carcasses, spilled items, and other obstacles.
Levels Level I : Basic level under close supervision, performing unskilled and semi‑skilled tasks.
Level II : Skilled work, full performance level in operating heavy equipment, routine highway maintenance duties.
Education and Experience Level I : None required.
Level II : One year of experience operating heavy equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Knowledge of safe operation and maintenance of power equipment or heavy machinery; manual labor; ability to maintain and operate power equipment; follow instructions.
Special Requirements
Valid Oklahoma driver’s license at time of employment.
Class A or B commercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements may be required.
Commercial driver’s license, class A, required within five months for ODOT/OTPA positions.
ODOT employees must obtain a CDL tank vehicle endorsement.
Pass drug test prior to appointment.
Willingness to perform job‑related travel and work non‑regular hours during emergencies; must have residence telephone for on‑call duty.
Physical requirements: stand, walk, reach, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl; lift 80–100 pounds; visual acuity requirements.
Certain positions may be classified as safety sensitive.
